The X79 platform, according to most technology measures, is obsolete...but only so for the market segment it was designed for - computer enthusiasts that must have the bleeding edge tech in their rig or their soul will hurt. The rest of us will find that this platform is absolutely amazing for mainstream computing and, granted the affordability of the components, is poised in good position to fall in the hands of those who demand a lot of power...but don't want to part with everything in their wallet. This processor, arguably the least potent of the Sandy Bridge-E offerings will blow your average computer user away with seemingly endless computing power and multitasking potential. Compare the used price of this chip to a new Skylake based i7 and you'd be hard pressed to come up with a ... Quad Channel RAM will be the only way to go for this PC enthusiast from now on. You do not think of making your main rig less than a Quad Channel rig once you get used to it. With PCIe 3.0 your video game play is always a notch better. You will not falter playing the newest games on Hi-Res everything maxed out. In fact, i7 3820 is begging for more video card. I see low CPU usage in Task Manager, maybe 20-25%. This CPU has a built in Turbo to 3.8GHZ and as the current value leader, eclipses the last generation of Extreme Edition Intel.Quad Channel RAM will be the only way to go for this PC enthusiast from now on. Great processor that can give years of hard working performance.
The 3820 LGA 2011 Intel Processor is one of three Top level 3xxx X79 series workstation / Gaming processors. This is not only great for general tasks but will be awesome for Photo and Video rendering, multiple processor intensive programs all at the same time. This processor may be the runt of the litter but a litter of pit bulls have runts too, and this is one mean dog of a i7.
