  • Don't buy this book or the racist Empire of the Summer Moon

If you want to learn about Red Cloud read any title but this one! It is written from the GREEDY white man's perspective and all the historical references are from the white man's viewpoint! For example the authors write about how the whites were so upset and horrified after the scalping and torture Lakota leveled on their captives and enemies. Yet they do not even mention the Sand Creek Massacred, Washita Massacre, or the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre (or that twenty soldiers were given the Medal of Honor for Wounded Knee)! They do not bring up or counter those stories with tales of the east coast raping, scalpings, torture etc... that was leveled on the indigenous people at the hands of the white christians. PLEASE take your racist book and put it to some good use like recycling.

  • Essential account of the mid-19th Century history of the Plains Indians

A beautifully written, compelling account of Red Cloud and the plains Indians. Although the focus is the events that occurred in the Powder River country during the mid-19th Century, there is much additional material that connects these events to those at other times and in other places, providing a much more thorough understanding of this tragic period in American history. Highly recommended.
