About this product

Product Information

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER In England's young silent-film industry, the megalomaniacal Randolph Fflytte is king. But rumors of criminal activities swirl around his popular movie studio. At the request of Scotland Yard, Mary Russell travels undercover to the set of Fflytte's latest cinematic extravaganza, Pirate King . Based on Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance, the project will either set the standard for moviemaking for a generation . . . or sink a boatload of careers. As the company starts rehearsals in Lisbon, the thirteen blond-haired, blue-eyed actresses whom Mary is chaperoning meet the swarm of real buccaneers Fflytte has recruited to provide authenticity. But when the crew embarks for Morocco and the actual filming, Russell senses ominous currents of trouble: a derelict boat, a film crew with many secrets, decks awash with budding romance--and now the pirates are ignoring Fflytte and answering only to their outlaw leader. Where can Sherlock Holmes be? As movie make-believe becomes true terror, Russell and Holmes themselves may experience a final fadeout. Features Laurie R. King's short story, Beekeepers for Beginners, previously available only as an eBook

  • Plot twist after twist keep you enthralled

I like all the Mary Russell Sherlock Holmes books including this one. You have to pay close attention to the plot initially and to the many fascinating characters as Russell joins a film company that is about to make a film within a film about pirates. Keep your attention sharp because it moves through the filming to an amazing series of plot twists and the latter part of the book is set in Morocco.

  • the pirate movie

in her books she spends too much time telling us about what the room looks like and what furnishing are in it. just get on with the story. i consider that alot of her descriptions are just filler. what is interesting is that i have all of her books.

  • Highly detailed and wonderful

As usual, Laurie King's story is wonderful but I find it a bit different than her usual stories; missed Sherlock's involvement in the story; he only pops in for a brief time; am disappointed that this edition only comes in paperback and you must purchase it in that format to get the bonus of the "Beekeepers" addition. Love Laurie King and her writing style and her gifted writing.
