About this product

Product Information

Martin Scorsese's THE AVIATOR is a lavish spectacle of a motion picture that harks back to Hollywood's Golden Era in telling the story of Howard Hughes, one of 20th-century America's most pioneering and influential figures. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the eccentric billionaire, Scorsese's biopic concentrates on Hughes's life between the 1920s and '40s, when he made striking contributions to both the film and aviation industries. At only 25 years of age, Hughes directed the most expensive film ever made up to that point, HELL'S ANGELS (1930), which Scorsese gleefully recreates here in all its sprawling, audacious glory. At the same time, he became known as an unabashed playboy, bedding the likes of Jean Harlow (singer Gwen Stefani), Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale), and Katherine Hepburn (a brilliant Cate Blanchett). In the mid-'30s, he turned his attention to the aviation industry, where he quickly became world-renowned for shattering speed and distance records. He also continued to test the limits of flight technology, building bigger, faster, and stronger aircrafts. All the while, he struggled with an obsessive-compulsive disorder that sent him into a full-fledged tailspin after a near-fatal plane crash. The film concludes with Hughes being called before the Senate in 1947 to defend himself against the nefarious Senator Owen Brewster (Alan Alda), who accused Hughes of taking money from the United States government during wartime.Stunningly photographed by Robert Richardson, Scorsese's nearly three-hour drama features an impassioned performance by DiCaprio, who is also credited as an executive producer. Although she appears in less than a third of the film, Blanchett delivers a performance that cements her status as one of the finest actresses ever to appear on the big screen.

    Surprised

Even though I like Leo (duh! who doesn't:)), when I saw a preview for this movie, I wasn't really interested in it. It just wasn't my "cup of coffee". But just recently I've read an article about Howard Hughes and I got interested in his story so that's why I bought this movie. And I have to say I was pleasantly surprised that it was pretty well done. I didn't even stop it to use the bathroom because I wanted to know what's next, and I wanted it NOW:D So yes.. I would recommend this movie if someone asks me about it!!

SOME THINGS SHOULD JUST STAY IN THE HANGAR AND NOT TAKE FLIGHT.....

The costuming and set pieces were pretty cool. And while this film was beautifully and cinematically shot, I just didn't care for the life story of Howard Hughes. Found it a bit boring and then kind of eerily sad and disturbing as his germ phobias and other issues consumed his life. Not my kind of movie.

  • The AVIATOR

I was around when HOWARD HUGHES was making headlines and this movie is a realistic sensational story of his life. Director SCORSESE deserved the Oscar, and LEONARDO DICAPRIO was excellent as Hughes, but as many others at first ,I did not think Leonardo could fill the part. Hughes loved making Movies and Airplanes. And many of the leading ladies of Hollywood, including Kate Hepburn,Ava Ginger Rogers and a teenage Mary Murphy,etc,etc..And as it truly happened, when things went bad ,the film then truly depicted Howard with that mustache covering his scarred lip from his experimental-test plane crash,(a sensational production bit that cost a bundle $$$ just for those few minutes..) and that famous frown to the end of the film when Hughes re-treated to his private "quarantined" hotel room ...

  • The Aviator

I wanted to see this movie when it was in theaters, but missed it! When I heard that the movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, and that Cate Blanchette won for best supporting actress, I decided to buy the DVD. Wow! It's rare that I see a movie that both educates and entertains like this one. Before I saw the movie, all I really knew about Howard Hughes was that he became a nutty, wealthy hermit. The movie showed me that he was not only nutty and rich; the man was brilliant. The acting was great, with well-known actors in near cameos, and the special effects were totally believable. I also loved the music from the 1920's, 1930's, and 1940's. The 'bonus features' included with the 2-DVD set are phenomenal, and include an entire History Channel biography of Hughes' aeronautical ...

  • Pretty close to a part of the story of the man as I recall as I was living & studied the man in my younger days before his demise.

It is entertaining but for a man who lived at the time and admired the man whom he never got to meet face to face. Having followed Howard's antics and enterprises and contemplating the mental acuity of the man I can say that this version of the man was ok for entertainment but sorely missed on the fundamental facts of the realty of the man. But then most revel in the entertainment [fantasy] rather than facts/truth. Old axiom: 'Print the Legend/Fantasy' it sells more than the Truth or the Facts. d'13
