About this product

Product Information

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE centers around Chow Mo-Wan (Tony Leung) and Su Li-Zhen (Maggie Cheung), neighbors living in a crowded apartment building in 1962 Hong Kong. Both married to people who are always away, they spend many nights home alone. The two make each other's acquaintance and soon find that they have a lot in common: Both enjoy martial arts, frequent the same noodle stand--and eventually discover that their spouses are cheating on them. (Mo-Wan's wife is having an affair with Li-Zhen's husband.) Hurt and angry, they find comfort in their growing friendship even as they resolve not to be like their unfaithful mates.Wong Kar-Wai's seventh film reunites him with Leung and Cheung, who provide perfectly evocative performances as the two hesitant would-be lovers. A slight departure from his more recent films (in which he used hyperkinetic camera movements to reflect the frenetic pace of modern Hong Kong life), here Wong uses fixed shots and stages static tableaus to capture a lost historical moment. Yet the film is filled with Wong's unique style, with its lush pageantry of colors, sounds, and images. A thoughtful and provocative exploration of memory, tradition, historical change, inevitability, and love, this vivid period piece offers a rich cinematic experience.

  • Tony Leung the Actor in his Best Yet !

You have to watch this Film twice plus the follow up loose sequel '2046' to capture Tony Leung's true talent as an Actor - where "Less is More", there is so much emotion captured in his quiet eyes, none of the typical American actor's use of physical cliches to generate the inner self. Plus, when you dig deep into his other films - "Your Place or Mine ?" "Happy Together", Chunking Express, with diverse roles as a Heart Surgeon, Airport Cop, Gay Lover, Image Consultant, Detective - these two films really are the best he's ever done over a 15 year period. Go to Netflix and watch all his stuff as I have - I'm looking forward to his latest spy thriller directed by Ang Wang. A period drama, he plays a bad guy, a departure from his usual conflicted nice guy. A superstar award winning Actor ...

  • great edition of a great movie

This is definitely the best of Wong kar Wai's films, it's polished and gorgeously shot and very moving. Fans of Tony Leung or Maggie Chung will adore it. It is full of love, unrequited and slightly painful - a very nostalgic and melancholy movie. The Criterion Edition is of course an 'ultimate' for this movie's fans. Great extras and also a booklet with original story included. A very special edition indeed. Love love love it .............

  • In The Mood for Love & more Wong Kar Wai

Kar Wai is brilliant, his movies are pure emotion, pure beauty. At first you're not quite sure how to take his movies... if you are an action movie buff as I am, you all of a sudden are in the middle of this surreal, hauntingly beautiful film and trying to follow a plot line. Advice... don't try to follow the plot line... this movie is way above and beyond a mere plotline. I recommend watching Days of Being Wild, then In The Mood for Love, and then 2046 (in that order). They all have a similiar thread and characters. They are the kind of movies to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
