Great low-maintenance NAS
I've only had this NAS for a couple days, but so far I like it; see last paragraph for a possible concern. It has plenty of features, is easy to set up, completely quiet. I'm using it as a back-up (only) device for multiple Windows and Linux PCs, and not as a media center or a live file-sharing device. I had been using an old PC as a NAS, but that died, so I got this QNAP to replace it, since I wanted a quiet appliance I did not have to maintain. Both Linux and Windows can connect with the QNAP. I enabled Windows shares to make that easy, since that's how I had been operating with the old PC; the device also supports other options like NFS. I haven't yet explored the QNAP QSync, but I'm in no hurry because I have everything backing up using scripts I developed when I was using the ... Under Tell us more, regarding "Is it fast?", I hesitated before saying yes. The PC NAS I used previously, even though it was old, it was much quicker than this QNAP TS-230. But I still answered the question Yes because I don't think that is a fair comparison. The QNAP is a small, quiet, low-maintenance appliance. I knew buying it that it did not have the processing power of a full PC. If you want something as fast as a PC, buy a NAS with more memory and a more powerful CPU - you'll easily pay at least 4X as much. So, for what this QNAP is, it does a competent job. A quick note for those who might be considering a similar replacement. I had a 750 GB drive in the PC for backups, and always had about 150-200 GB free. When I put the same drive in this QNAP and put the files back, I only had about 35 GB free. The NAS keeps some of the space for itself, so keep this in mind while planning. I'm going to get a 3 TB drive as a replacement.
