Produktinformation

Lord Byron (1788-1824) veröffentlichte sein Drama um die Absetzung des venezianischen Dogen Francesco Foscari 1821. Unter Foscari erlebte Venedig den Höhepunkt seiner Machtentfaltung, geriet jedoch finanziell in Schwierigkeiten. Nach Auseinandersetzungen um Foscaris Sohn Jacopo, der in der Haft starb, wurde der Doge am 21. Oktober 1457 vom Rat der Stadt Venedig entmachtet und starb kurz darauf. Byrons eher als langes Gedicht denn als aufführbares Bühnenstück gedachtes Drama diente als Vorlage für Giuseppe Verdis 1844 in Rom uraufgeführte Oper »I due Foscari«.
