About this product

Product Information

A more thorough and straightforward adaptation of Frank Herbert's beloved sci-fi novel than the 1984 David Lynch version, this six-hour Sci Fi Channel miniseries, written and directed by John Harrison, follows the Atreides family's adventures on the desert planet Arrakis. Far into the future, various factions fight for the valuable melange spice that exists exclusively on Arrakis and is protected by fierce, gigantic sandworms. While the indigenous, blue-eyed Arrakisians wait for their Messiah to free them from the corrupt Harkonnens, the family Atreides endures infighting and political intrigue. This sprawling and reverent production features a cast that includes William Hurt, Giancarlo Giannini, Alec Newman, Julie Cox, and Matt Keeslar.

Dune shows its age but this disc set is superb

Love this story but I forgot how dated this version actually is. I guess it's going to be a thing with Dune--each version will be a reflection of the technological era it came from. The CGI in this version is terrible, but it's no worse than the terrible bluescreen and miniature work from the David Lynch version

  • The Best Adaptation We're Likely to Get (An Argument)

Other reviews of the "Dune" Sci-Fi Chanel miniseries have abused its actors, story and direction. Those partial to the David Lynch version called "blasphemy" while purists bemoaned the miniseries' changes to the story. Nonetheless, this version of "Dune" is likely the best adaption we're going to get. With the miniseries format, the filmmakers had more room and time to explore the book's concepts than did the 136-minute David Lynch debacle. Viewers get a true glimpse into the culture of Arakkis, thanks to the filmmakers' immense attention to detail (watch the making-of feature and you'll see what I mean). Meanwhile, the film's talent is all expertly cast, even if the ensemble is comprised of unknown Brits and Czechs, with the exception of William Hurt. For a made-for-TV miniseries, ...

  • An interesting adaptation.

Interesting adaptation of Frank Herberts Classic. In that it was originally shown as a mini-series on German Television, one gets far more time for character development than one did in David Lynch's version flawed 1984 opus. However while the 2002 version has time on it's hands it does not have great acting nor a budget equal to it's length. As a result you see more and learn more but you get less than you did with the Lynch version. Still I enjoyed it and the 3 disc set, while long on time is quite short on extra's, however you must understand it was a TV production never meant for our eyes and ears so for what it is, it's better than average. • Watch

This is one of my favorite "sick in bed" marathon watches. It's a far cry from the 80's movie and I've never actually read the book, so I don't have much of a basis of comparison. But after watching this a half dozen times or more I'm almost afraid to. The special effects were decent enough for the time, but most importantly it brought together a talented group of actors for a quality science fiction program - a principle that SyFy has abandoned in recent years. It portrays nice, complicated themes and story development not often translated well in TV programming. The plot obviously contains some unique (and not-so-unique) religious themes. So if you're what I'd call "religiously unimaginative," this really won't be your cup of tea.

  • Want to watch something interesting?

Boy oh boy, Frank Herbert did a fanstastic job with the book. The movie is not as fantastic as the book. However, this specific DVD is very good. It has plenty of substance, plot and a wide variety of characters. If you are looking for a decent movie with a good storyline behind it, there is none other than Dune. It truly takes you to a different movie style. I highly suggest you read the book though before you watch this movie. This is a sci-fi based movie. If you watch this movie, don't expect to be watching Bambi. Expect to be watching a serious movie with a complex structure. I give this movie a lot of praise for its effort to maintain the original book structure. Hay, I'm Universalbargain3317, Thanks for stopping by my corner of Ebay.
