Ever since seeing Karate Kid 2, I have feel in love with Asian culture. Although in the past years, I have focused my attention mainly to Japan. I'm wanting to expose my son to this beautiful culture and having been buying up as many Japanese children's books as I can. This is defiantly my favorite. The story takes place in the feudal period in Japan or what we westerns would refer to as the medieval ages. One daimyo lord is having problems with a rat who has taken over the castle. So he goes to a temple to ask a docho(monk)to send a samurai warrior to get rid of it. What happens? That's for you to find out. The cast features all animal characters, which includes mostly cats and dogs. This so far is my favorite out of the several other books I have gotten so far. It is a very ... It is a very much American book that was based on a book that was based on another book. The illustrations also are not Japanese based, but there are some subtle hints that could be considered takes of Japanese illustrations. This is a wonderful book with a zen lesson to be learned. The very back page talks about the book itself along with definitions of some of the terms used in the book. So it also educational as well as entertaining. I highly recommend this book.
