Chops the Drum Wonder, aka Buddy Rich
This is overall, "Very Good". What keeps it from being excellent is the sound. Now ones fault, sometimes it is not known the sound will be less than desired until it comes out. Especially in 1978. As the DVD progresses, the mix improves. No matter, it is still very worthwhile to own, for Big Band fans and Buddy fans. Now on to the blood & guts. I'm an active drummer and a musical arranger and a Buddy fan for life. He has been my greatest influence, which has been a blessing and a curse. What makes this so good from a drumming stand point, is in no other videos of Buddy and I think I have them all, does it display him seemingly floating over the time. For bass and drums to work together like this is very rare. Although, I've known of bass player, Tom Warrington's work for a long ... This is overall, "Very Good". It's easy to see why Buddy beleived this to be the best band he ever had. When the bass player has the time, the drummer is free to float over it all and know he does not have to "babysit" the horns. Horns drag when given the chance, because they have to breath. This means if they don't breath in time, or "in time" their rhythm is late. That being said, now we'll talk about the horns and arrangements. With all of Buddy's bands, they had to play his time. His time and feel were always on top of the beat. What this means to you non drummers is that the drummer is not waiting for anything to happen, he's expecting it to happen and is setting it up. With this responsibility an amazing amount of control is needed. Control of dynamics, speed, feel and musical effect so he can affect. Buddy had it all. If he could have been the whole band it would have sound the way it does on this DVD. He plays all the parts. The band sounds like one big horn. The emotion is collective and like a freight train. If any of you on any instrument have ever played in a big band or a great show band you know what I mean. So to rate this only, GOOD is really unfair. There is much more to this than the sound. Watching the band enjoy themselves is the best. There will always be "poker faced" musicians in band, but you can tell they're into it. Since this stuff comes around very seldom, The Jazz Icon series has done a very good job presenting this. I will certainly buy more of their DVD's in an attempt to hold on to music history and continue to learn from the great. Awesome performance by the Buddy Rich KILLER FORCE band once again giving 100percent. Very fine sound and video editing. IIf anyone is not smiling and extremely uplifted by the end of the performance, somebody had better check their pulse.

I WATCHED THIS WITH MY BROTHER WHO HAS BEEN A PROFESSIONAL DRUMMER FOR 25 YEARS!! WE STARTED TO WATCH THIS DVD AND BUDDY RICH STARTED OUT SLOW,KEEPING THE BEAT.THE MORE HE PLAYED THE FASTER AND FASTER HE GOT!! IT WAS AMAZING AT HIS AGE,AT THAT TIME HE WAS ABOUT 66 OR 67.HIS BAND WAS PERFECT, ON TIME.BUDDY RICH HAD TOTAL CONTROL OF EVERY PART OF THAT BAND!AFTER EACH SONG HE WOULD FLIP HIS STICKS TO THE SIDE AND GRAB A NEW PAIR, BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL CHIPPED UP!! HE WAS SO WONDERFUL TO WATCH.HE HAD RESPECT FOR HIS DRUM KIT BUT YOU COULD SEE NOT ONLY HIS BAND,BUT EVERYONE IN THE ROOM HAD THE UTMOST RESPECT FOR MR.BUDDY RICH!!!! THANK YOU!! OAKLANDRDRFAN....
