About this product

Product Information

With INLAND EMPIRE, David Lynch--creator of such mind-bending works as ERASERHEAD and LOST HIGHWAY--delivers his most avant-garde, abstract, and impenetrable vision yet. A three-hour fever nightmare of a motion picture, INLAND EMPIRE takes the basic structure of Lynch's 2001 masterpiece, MULHOLLAND DRIVE, and spins it even further out of control. A blonde actress (Laura Dern) is preparing for her biggest role yet, but when she finds herself falling for her co-star (Justin Theroux), she realizes that her life is beginning to mimic the fictional film that they're shooting. Adding to her confusion is the revelation that the current film is a remake of a doomed Polish production, 47, which was never finished due to an unspeakable tragedy. And that's the only the beginning. Soon, a seemingly endless onslaught of indescribably bizarre situations flashes across the screen: a sitcom featuring humans in bunny suits, a parallel story set in a wintry Poland, a houseful of dancing streetwalkers, screwdrivers in stomachs, menacing Polish carnies, and much, much more. By the time the film's electrifying closing-credit sequence arrives, even diehard Lynch fans will be gasping for air. What most glaringly differentiates INLAND EMPIRE from Lynch's previous work is the format on which it was shot. This is the first time that he has chosen to shoot on digital video, as opposed to film, and while the decision is jarring at first, the grainy imagery nonetheless casts a creepy, haunting spell. Laura Dern's multi-fractured performance is downright heroic. She gives the film the human grounding that it so desperately needs. Not for the fragile or timid, INLAND EMPIRE is a full-blown assault to the senses.

    Eerie and hypnotizing

Good luck trying to figure this out as you watch it the first time but, if you're like me, you'll love the trip. As usual, Lynch sets a mysterious, dreamlike mood and uses lots of shockingly unexpected images. Everything is a bit off-kilter. In turns you'll be scared, sad, or worried and have no real idea why. He keeps you on the edge of your seat because you never know for sure what shocking surprise will come at any time. You'll be all into a scene in present day L.A. and then be jerked back to a generation earlier in Poland with seemingly no rhyme or reason. Lynch loves Laura Dern's expressive face and you can see why after watching this. Having no clue as to what I had just seen I looked up a number of explanations of the plot by reviewers who had spent a lot of time trying to ...

  • David Lynch and Laura Dern dream in digital video

I'd been having trouble finding Inland Empire on DVD for the US Region. I was happy to finally find it for a price I could manage. I cannot offer a review of the movie itself, other than to say if you do not like David Lynch already, you probably will not like this. If you like Lynch and are interested in methods of filmmaking, check it out to see what he does with digital video.

  • Only for serious David Lynch fans

I could never give an Average review to a David Lynch film, however since I doubt few others besides Lynch fans could love this film I can only rate it Good. For those who long for his Eraserhead days, this is definitely a large step in that direction with intense, dream-like imagery but with the kind of rich visuals that he couldn't do on an Eraserhead budget. Expect to be disturbed, mystified and thoroughly blown away as only David can.

  • David Lynch is King

King David. Dreams layered upon psyche layered upon mysteries layered upon liquid emotions (not substance based, mind you; liquid like the water falling in the open title of his show ‘twin peaks’)

  • IT'S DAVID LYNCH, SO CAVEAT EMPTOR

One of the weirdest David Lynch movies ever, but not as incomprehensible as "Lost Highway". The video of Lynch making quinoa in his kitchen is hilarious.
