Director Lewis Gilbert cleverly mixes comedy and tragedy with a crucial lesson about immorality. The film features one of Caine's finest performances.

Innovative Cinema
It's tempting to say, "They don't make movies like this anymore." What is relevant is that a movie as a character study and having the protagonist speak to the viewing audience makes for intriguing, innovative cinema. Alfie the ladies' man is a difficult person to categorize: he abhors commitment but remains loyally attached to his "birds," and he gets as much rough emotional treatment as he gives while trying to figure out the dynamics of romance. This movie was made at the beginning of the Sixties' sexual revolution - another brave aspect of the story line - and brings most surrounding issues concerning sexual freedom into a perspective that today seems visionary.It's tempting to say, "They don't make movies like this anymore."
