Harder-edged than Car Wheels & Essence but great
For the uninitiated, Lucinda may be acquired taste. She has a twangy, hard-edged voice. She can sound country, bluesy, Southern, and/or a tiny bit gospel - all in one song. Her band(s) are strong and her CDs have great guest musicians (Buddy Miller, Charlie Sexton, Emmylou Harris). And she writes incredible lyrics that run a range of topics - heartbreak, anger. Many of her songs get covered by others. Remember "Passionate Kisses" sung by Mary Chapin Carpenter in the early 90s? I've been listening to Lucinda's CDs "Car Wheels on A Gravel Road" and "Essence" for a few years, but increased the frequency over the last few months. Two things have contributed to this... * Seeing Emmylou Harris & Buddy Miller and other fabulous musicians at Hardly Strictly in San Francisco. See ... I played Lucinda's "Car Wheels" and "Essence" quite a few times. It was like drinking a good Zinfandel - jammy, simple & complex at the same time - makes you sit up & take notice, and ask for more! First listen of "World without Tears" made me sit up & take notice. Her band on this one is different - gives her a jammier quality (a bit more improvisational for Lucinda - electric guitar & bass are more noticeable). The music & the songs push her Essence edge further (music as well as voice). If you like the title song for Essence, you will like the song "Righteously." Wow! Someone who says what they want & makes you feel (musically anyway) as if you can too!

Lucinda Williams music touches my soul and I can relate to a lot of her songs that have to do with independence, relationships, heartaches, men being cruel for no reason other than just to be cruel. I have found that some of her songs have cleared my head and helped me put a lot of my life into perspective and i have become more assertive because of it and i am finding out who i really am and what "i" want in and out of life.Lucinda Williams music touches my soul and I can relate to a lot of her songs that have to do with independence, relationships, heartaches, men being cruel for no reason other than just to be cruel. I have found that some of her songs have cleared my head and helped me put a lot of my life into perspective and i have become more assertive because of it and i am finding out who i really am and what "i" want in and out of life.
