  • Compelling discussion of major ideas in architecture

This book is de Botton's attempt to answer the question, "Why do we find certain things beautiful?" His answer is this: we find things beautiful because they embody the virtues that are too scarce in our lives. I bought this book on a whim, at a time when I was considering whether or not to pursue the architecture major, and I am thankful that I did. de Botton is a Swiss philosopher, but his writing is incredibly compelling. "The Architecture of Happiness" is a compilation of de Botton's take on what makes good architecture, but it is also a good resource for the layman interested in discovering the world of architecture for the first time.
