  • Four stars largely because of early 1950s mono sound

Wilhelm Furtwangler’s 1953 EMI recording of Wagner’s “Ring” cycle is rough around the edges in a few places and the orchestral sound not as clear as Solti/Vienna (Decca), Bohm/Bayreuth (Philips) or Karajan/Berlin (DG) but it is very good and I am quite satisfied with the (mono) sound. Furtwangler’s pacing is perfect, and the singers can all be heard clearly. This 1990 remastering of Furtwangler’s Radio Italy RING is very listenable and I consider I got a great deal in purchasing it. I recommend this “Ring” to others with an interest in Wagner or opera in general.
