About this product

Product Information

Roland Joffé's unflinching drama recounts the true story of New York Times journalist Sidney Schanberg (Sam Waterston) and Cambodian journalist and translator Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor), who found themselves trapped in the nightmare of the Khmer Rouge revolution in Cambodia. While stationed in Phnom Penh in the early 1970s, Schanberg and Pran become close friends and confidants, negotiating and writing many groundbreaking stories. When the ruling Lon Nol government is overthrown by the Khmer Rouge, the country is turned upside down--killing is common in the streets, and children become gun-toting informants. Schanberg is forced to flee the country, with his fellow American photographer Al Rockoff (John Malkovich) and British journalist Jon Swain (Julian Sands). Despite their exhaustive efforts to free Pran, they have no choice but to leave him behind. Pran is forced to endure excruciating agony at the Pol Pot death camps, where any shred of individuality or dissent is beaten out of the prisoners. After years of brutal torture, Pran manages to escape and begins a long odyssey to Thailand and the border refugee camps. As Pran struggles to stay alive, Schanberg endures life in New York wracked with guilt over the loss of his good friend, desperately attempting to locate him. This haunting drama is epic in its portrayal of a war-torn country devastated by mass genocide. Images of both great horror and beauty resonate with awesome power and honesty. Joffé's first film features superb performances from a first-rate ensemble of actors, including Waterston, Sands, Malkovich, and Ngor in an Oscar-winning role.

Received this excellent 2-movie set promptly and well packed in a bubble wrap envelope for shipping. Although the seller advertised this amazing set in good condition, I found it to be in almost like new condition, just a minor scratch on one of the discs, not an issue for playing. It’s a real find and I am happy to add this to my film collection. I am a repeat customer and am always very happy with my purchases. Excellent communication as well. I highly recommend this excellent seller.

    The Killing Fields

I personally have not watched it; but I do like to revisit war pics every now and then. This particular purchase is for my grandson ‘s teacher for teacher appreciation week. I also purchased a memoir of the survivors for her as well.

  • Top critical review

Failed in all areas, very disappointing!

Failed to adequately identify the Communist leader Pol Pot’s (never mentioned his name?!) regime. A masked reference to this despicable despot and his Communist Chinese backed (Khmer Rogue)regime, that tortured and murdered millions of his native Cambodian people. This movie was disjointed (poorly directed)and did not represent its title......it focused mostly on the journalists and their self-congratulations. Acting was barely average at times. An all around disappointment!

  • The ugly side of man in a poverty stricken land.

The ugly side of man rears its head showing a side that belays the fact that animals are one step above on the ladder of decency, purpose, and fairness. Human life is displayed as being cheap. Humans killing other humans as if they were nothing more than defenseless insects. This film shows the lowest form of human dignity and decency when people with authority are greedy and want more and more authoritive power over others. There is a storyline plot lurking in the background and it is political if not daring. It is as if mankind in that part of the world has been held on the lease for so long that once broken of that lease destroys with demonic fury. This film depicts what humans can become at their worst and yet the film also depicts a lack of hopelessness and despair on the victoms.

  • Great Title!

Heartreaking, sobering true story of what happened in Cambodia in the mid-70's, about the relationships developed within the international press community, about the trials & struggles of one Cambodian medical doctor who worked toward saving his family, many others, and eventually himself. A hard look at how strong one's commitment to truth & survival can be.

  • The Killing Fields

This movie was purchased for my husband, who had several military movies taped on a beta machine. Since beta machines are way out dated and our machine doesn't play that well I thought this would be a wonderful way for him to start a new connection with movies on dvd's. He was surprised when this movie came and enjoys watching it. This movie has alot of action and most of the film is true to life for the time he was there in Vietnam. If someone really wants to know for the most part how it was in 1965 - 1966 over there and enjoys action/war films this would be the movie for them.
