When Sally Hyde's (Jane Fonda) husband, a ramrod-straight marine captain, Bob Hyde (Bruce Dern), is sent to Vietnam, she leaves the isolated world of the officer's quarters and begins volunteer social work at the veterans hospital. There her unthinking support of the war and her blindness to its effects are challenged by meeting the crippled men struggling to recover, psychologically as well as physically, from their time in country. Many, like Luke Martin (Jon Voight), now a paraplegic, are embittered and full of unfocused, uncontrollable rage, which he takes out on the prim, controlled Sally. Interestingly, they went to the same large high school, but she was a pretty, popular cheerleader type and he was just a guy in the back of the class. Gradually, as she changes politically (always signaled by changes in hair and fashion) and he recovers emotionally, they become friends and then lovers. This causes a sexual awakening in Sally that furthers her transformation from a repressed wife to an independent woman. Then her husband comes home.Hal Ashby's film, with its classic rock soundtrack and lush photography by Haskell Wexler, submerged its politics in a warm nostalgia, although it was made just a few years after the war ended. Still, its theme of individual transformation, both political and sexual, struck a chord with baby boomer audiences who all felt, to varying degrees, that they had done the same thing.

Coming Home. A Winer.
Great character development and study. All the elements of empathy and pathos. John Voight did a masterful job, while Jane Fonda, (have never been a fan of her), did also do a very credible job. For all Viet Nam vets, I think this is a great film.

I like Jon Voight and Bruce Dern, so I got this movie. I only got to see Bruce Dern act toward the end of the movie, all-be-it a great job, I wanted to see him more. And Jon Voight can't talk much with Jane Fonda running her mouth. So it's a typical feminist anti-war Jane Fonda movie. She cheats on her husband with Jon Voight. Wow, like there's not enough movies about that. And that's pretty much it. I was hoping to see some PTS and nightmarish Nam scenes or something, and you do see Jon Voigh's urin bag explode. That was cool! And Bruce gets over dramatic at the end. But it's definitely not making the cut for me as a great film. Sorry Fonda fans!I like Jon Voight and Bruce Dern, so I got this movie. This movie says alot about how our vets from Viet Nam were treated when they came back. It also shows just how difficult it was dealing with the trama of such a wasted war, a war nobody wanted to win. It tells the story of a military wife seeking to become herself not just a military wife and what she learns in the process astounds her on the deepest level. Her relationship with a disabled vet and a husband who couldn't wait to get over there and fight tear at her. This to me is Jane Fondas best role. Jon Voit was so captivating as the disabled vet, truly showing us every facet of his character. Bruce Dern, the husband, so patriotic, a true military man ready to go fight for his country, give his life unconditionally, finds the truth about the war, something he just can't live with. ... I had seen this film a long time ago, but had forgotten about the substance,depth, and message that it has. The film left a definite impression on me. John Voight and Jane Fonda did marvelous acting roles. It was an anti-Vietnam war film that basically said to me I hate the war but support our troops. Coming Home in my view is a must-see film for people who remember that era, did or did not support the war, and would like a story of the effect of war on people who were in it, or not. Coming Home Needs to Be Viewed Again Now
Jane Fonda and Jon Voight both won Oscars for this disturbing movie about how returning soldiers are many times mistreated in the veterans hospitals and in a second subplot how some gung-ho soldiers get so depressed after their combat experiences. Sally Hyde (Fonda) plays a pretty but naive wife of her Marine captain, Bob Hyde, played by Bruce Dern. She was a cheerleader in high school but appears shy and unaware. When her husband is gladly sent to Vietnam, she supports his efforts with all her heart but becomes a volunteer at a local veteran's hospital to do her part in the war effort and to ward off loneliness. Boy is she shocked to see all the wounded soldiers, but even more so she is shocked to see how the other officer wives dismiss the problems of the wounded in favor of their ... This movie was honored in 1978 but could have been made now. It is a heartbreaking experience for everyone and ends on a mixed note. I am sure that it was Fonda's contribution to her anti-war effort to say "I told you so" after the war was over. Evidently, Hollywood agreed with so many Oscars going to this movie. In addition to Best Actor and Best Actress, the movie also won for Best Screenplay. It was nominated for Best Director (Hal Ashby), Best Picture, and Best Supporting Actor (Dern). The movie is full of Baby Boomer music. What comes to my mind most are: "There's Something Happening Here," "Hey Jude," "My Girl," "Born To Be Wild," "Goodbye Ruby Tuesday," "Strawberry Fields Forever," and "You're Out of Touch." This movie is not a war movie. But like "Swing Shift" it depicts what life was like in the United State while the war was going on. It leaves you with something to think about.
