"Das Gedicht will zu einem Andern... es braucht ein Gegenüber." Paul Celan (1920-1970) gilt als der bedeutendste deutschsprachige Dichter in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Paul Celan wuchs in der Stadt Czernowitz, mitten im berühmten "Buchenland" (Bukowina) auf. Nach einer als glücklich empfundenen Kindheit verlor er seine Mutter und seinen Vater in den Vernichtungslagern der Nazis. Als Überlebender der Schoa entschied er sich dafür, in der "Sprache der Mörder" weiterzuschreiben, jedoch im Bewusstsein, das seine Sprache eine andere, wahrhaftigere werden musste. Celan verließ Czernowitz und lebte als Übersetzer und Dichter in verschiedenen Ländern, erst in Rumänien, dann in Österreich und schließlich, den Großteil seines Lebens in Paris. Geschult an den Werken Friedrich Hölderlins, Rainer Maria Rilkes und Franz Kafkas schuf er ein umfangreiches lyrisches Werk, das er als eine Art Flaschenpost verstand, "aufgegeben in dem - gewiss nicht immer hoffnungsstarken - Glauben, sie könnte irgendwo und irgendwann an Land gespült werden, an Herzland vielleicht." 1970 beging Paul Celan in Paris Selbstmord.
