Rick Famuyiwa breathes a refreshing burst of air into the romantic comedy genre with BROWN SUGAR, a film that is as much a tribute to hip-hop as it is a celebration of friendship and love. Dre (Taye Diggs) and Sidney (Sanaa Lathan), best friends since elementary school, have been in love with rap music since they can remember. It has even carried through into their adult lives. Dre is making a successful living as a record executive, while Sidney has just taken over as editor-in-chief at one of the hip-hop community's most popular magazines. Somehow, romance has never been an issue between the two, until they both find new loves of their own--for Dre, it's the beautiful Reese (Nicole Ari Parker), for Sidney, it's basketball star Kelby (Boris Kodjoe). Disillusioned with the lackluster music that his label continually puts out, Dre decides to branch out on his own. Sidney gives him a loan to support his bold new venture, but it is this unflinching support that eventually begins to grate on Reese and Kelby, forcing Dre and Sidney to confront their true feelings. Famuyiwa's crowd-pleasing film is boosted by Mos Def and Queen Latifah's hysterical supporting performances.

The mix of the love story, where two longtime friends are brought together originally by their love of Hip Hop, who eventually take their relationship to another level, is smart, funny and engaging. Taye and Sanaa are attractive, charming leads who exhibit a chemistry that makes the relationship believeable, making the moviegoer care about the relationship. Nicole Ari Parker, Boris Kodjoe, Mos Def and Queen Latifah lend terrific support. In the movie, their caring for each other and Hip Hop endures and stands the test of time. And isn't that what true love does. When did I fall in love with Hip Hop? It was 1989 and it was this movie that helped people remember how wonderful love and Hip Hop both are. As two "Old School" joints once said, "There Ain't Nothin' Like Hip Hop Music," and ... Predictable, repetitive...a 2 hr. version of 1 song
This movie is somewhat enjoyable. It is refreshing to see the commerical hip hop of today being portrayed as negative, which it is, and to see light being shone on the foundations of hip hop. For those unfamiliar with hip hop it displays how the genre has deteroriated and shows how some are trying to bring back creativity, passion, and true artistic expression. However, this movie has many draw backs. It is extremely predicatable, it is a little too similar to the film The Best Man in it's romantic angles (no spoiler), and the film is repetitive. This film draws way too heavily upon Common's "I used to love H.E.R" song. It's mentioned in the film and played in the film repeatedly. This was a very creative and celebrated song when it came out in the 90's, but it was a three minute song. ... This movie is somewhat enjoyable. Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lathan are great in this urban romantic/comedy!
This is a great movie! Simultaneouly gives commentary on hip hop as well as a friendship/relationship. Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lathan lead a great cast (which includes Queen Latifah, Mos Def, Boris Kodjoe, and Nicole Ari Parker) in this romantic comedy. The addition of real hip-hop stars in the opening credits is a great touch. Anyone with a love for rap and/or romantic comedies should DEFINITELY see this! Funny, romantic, heart-warming, and a little thought-provoking, too!This is a great movie! Simultaneouly gives commentary on hip hop as well as a friendship/relationship.
