About this product

Product Information

Feudal Japan meets Soul Train in Samurai Champloo: Sidetracked from Bandai Namco Games. Based on the animé series Samurai Champloo, aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, the game centers on a "lost episode" and features three playable characters.

A conflict is rising in the city of Ezo between the ruling Matsumae clan and the indigenous folks who have lived in the area for generations. Two main characters, Jin and Mugen, begin on different paths, but meet up several times. Players will maneuver them both through each of their stories, hacking through enemies as they go. Another character, Fuu, is a game exclusive.

The "Sidetracked" fighting style can be compared to break dancing with a sword, as the battle sequences are accompanied by rap music that affect the character's moves. Combos based on hip-hop grooves can be unlocked, swapped at will, and linked together to create a slash fest free-for-all.

The tension level of the character also affects combos. The more blows landed increases the tension, and as long as the hits keep going without a knock from an enemy, the level will continue to rise. When the tension meter is full, the character will enter "Tate" mode and this is where the real hard-hitting action begins. In "Tate" mode, a button is shown on screen. Once pressed, the object is to hit an opponent as many times before being hit.

If more than 100 blows are landed, the character will enter "Trance" mode, a flight form where gamers must defeat 100 opponents to earn bonus items and hidden artwork. "Hyper" mode is engaged by performing the highlighted skill in the combo tree, and players can throw super fast punches before an opponent realizes they are getting beaten to a bleeding pulp. More than 50 weapons are available for use, and each character will use the weapons in a slightly different way.

  • Stylish Yet Repetative

While the game boasts plenty of style in its visuals, soundtrack and of course its featured playable characters from the series, it is truly a hack n' slash game at the end of the day. There aren't any kinds of additive elements to the combat or character development other than buying new swords or "records" (which dictate the combos the character can use & change the background music of whatever stage you're playing through.) The combos are usually not all that lengthy, and consist of using the same 2 buttons, heavily relying on button mashing the Square button. Different swords vary in resistance (the more you use it, the more its endurance level drops until it breaks). Swords do change in appearance, which is interesting, but not enough so to attract very much attention after you get ...

Made by the same developer that made Killer 7 and Contact, Grasshopper made a decent effort in portraying the world of Samurai Champloo. Being it is a video game of the popular Tv series there is are a few things worth mentioning. The blood is fun and plentiful, and it is all about style in fighting. The soundtrack concept gives a unique feel however is counterintuitive in nature to the jaded gamer since tracks dictate your fighting style. Over all if your as into the story as much as the gameplay you will not be dissapointed. If your looking for in depth gameplay this is not your game, but there is a fun hack and slash factor you get from the game.

  • Uhh...

Haven't had the time to play it much. I have played through the 1st stage, and it's been great so far. This is a Suda51 game, so if you've played any of their games, unfortunately, this feels exactly the same. As a matter of fact, there was a section I ran into that was exactly the same as this one stage in No More Heroes. I love the 3D renderings of the characters. It's a must-have for hardcore Samurai Champloo fans.

  • Samurai Champloo: Sidetracked (PS2)

This game is pretty awesome. The graphics on the intro to the game are amazing! The fighting style is very unique, where you fight according to different music rythems. The game overall is pretty easy, but its extremely fun to play. So go play as one of your favorite characters from the hit anime Samurai Champloo!!!

  • Samurai Champloo PS2 game

The graphics are great and the characters played their own voices except Mugen sounded a little different. Can play Either Jin or Mugen and each with their trademark styles. Additional players are added as you play to keep ya going. With a theme that stays within the grip of how the series is layed out, a fan will enjoy this game!
