About this product

Product Information

Burt Lancaster stars as General James Scott in Frankenheimer's film of Rod Serling's adaptation of Fletcher Knebel and Charles Waldo Bailey's bestselling novel set in the early 1960s. Like much of the American public, Gen. Scott, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff is unhappy with a nuclear arms pact with the Soviet Union recently signed by President Jordan Lyman (Fredric March). But the extent of Scott's displeasure is not fully understood until his aide, Col. Martin "Jiggs" Casey (Kirk Douglas), finds some messages suggesting that the general and the Joint Chiefs have been planning a military takeover of the government at a top-secret air base in Texas. The plan is scheduled to go into effect in seven days, while the president is in sequestration during a military drill. Duly informed, the President sends Senator Raymond Clark (Edmond O'Brien), to investigate the base, and the Senator is held there against his will. In Gibraltar, presidential aide Paul Girard (Martin Balsam) obtains evidence of the coup from Admiral Paul Barnswell (John Houseman), but after the aide is killed in the crash of his return flight, the admiral denies any knowledge of an imminent military takeover. Although dialogue-heavy for a thriller, it remains an effective slice of cold war paranoia, with echoes of the Cuban missile standoff that may have been absorbed from Frankenheimer's friend, Robert F. Kennedy.

Yes, it could happen here (did it?)

This is a movie JFK wanted made, and it was due to premiere around the time of his assassination. Director John Frankenheimer had already explored the dark world of conspiracy and extremism in The Manchurian Candidate before taking on this plot, revolving around a planned military coup, hatched in the name of 'national security,' to save America from a supposedly weak President. the ongoing decay of our political order in the USA make this movie all the more relevant, which is why I bought it to show in my political science class.

  • Seven Days in May review

This DVD took 3 weeks to arrive, thus I was not able to rate/review it. As expected, I enjoyed viewing it. I had originally seen it on the internet, but I wanted to own the DVD copy. Fredric March is one of my favorite actors, for which reason I purchased the DVD.

  • Great "oldie" at a great price!! Suspensful, gripping!!

This DVD has a great plot with great actors. Loved everything about the movie, especially commentary by the director. Saw the movie on TCM Network and loved it so much that I wanted to add it to my DVD collection. They don't make great films like this anymore. It was an "edge of your seat" movie from start to finish!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! GREAT, GREAT, GREAT!!!

  • Seven Days in May

Movie provides top notch drama, great acting and tight dialog (screenplay by Rod Serling) And with a two great final confrontations between Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster AND Burt Lancaster and Fredric March. I first saw movie when i was a teenager and wanted my children to see it. It also provides an education of the US constitution and the democratic process. It was made in the 1960's but still holds up in 2010s.
