I bought this Coby DVD-514 player as a second unit. After reading the reviews, I thought it would be good for use in my editing and review process of DVD's. I was wrong. Obviously the other reviewers never do anything but watch a DVD straight through. What wasn't said is it has no fast forward or fast reverse function. According to the manual, it has a search function, but there is no button on the remote for search! The buttons on the remote listed as forward and reverse are the skip forward and skip reverse. Not anything you can use the repeat a certain part of a DVD. It also does not always allow me to go back to the main menu, or to start playing from main menu without a lot of button pushing and waiting several seconds to see if anything will happen. As far as I can tell, there is no real company COBY or technical support of any kind. The phone numbers listed in the manual and on the listed website ring unanswered no matter the time of day. Likewise, emails from the website seem to go directly into a trash can since they never bring a response of any kind. Given the lack of functions, I believe this unit was a mistake and whoever makes them are just unloading. The low price makes this unit better than no DVD/CD player.

Best bang for the buck, plays it all, + 5.1 surround
Best deal for the buck. Was looking for a cheap DVD player to play music and occasionally DVDs. I own a PS3 and didn't need a Blu-ray player or anything too fancy. All I needed was an easy to operate DVD player that could play MP3s burned onto CDs and DVDs without having to turn on the TV. Hooked up with basic RCAs, ran it through the receiver, turned on progressive scan and I am happy with it. For Blu-rays I can always use the PS3, same for web browsing and YouTube, or hook-up a laptop using HDMI if need be. As an added bonus, this DVD player came with the 'better' remote. I've read reviews elsewhere stating the player came with a flimsy credit card type remote. Not mine, came with a fully functioning 'bigger' remote. I know reviews of this device can range from excellent to terrible. But I bought this thing for $15 bucks and am familiar with this model, it plays everything you throw at it. Can be hooked up via component cables and comes with 5.1 surround sound output right out the box. I didn't try the 5.1 surround since I have a much better 7.1 receiver and doubt this thing will have the output power nor true 5.1 instead of virtual but hey it has it. Video can also be sent using digital coax and sound output via optical. For $15, can't go wrong. Let's see if it lasts :-) Good luck!

How to make a family of 10 happy
This was purchased as a Christmas gift for my brother, sister-in-law and their eight children. They relied on what was on TV and not able to rent DVDs or play movies. I wanted to purchase a DVD but not one that would cost a fortune. Those of you with children know how destructive a child can be at times, imagine eight of them. They were sooo happy! I hear it plays very well and they've had no problems with it. It has brought the family together for Saturday night movies. And as you can imagine, it has also started arguements on who gets to use it first.This was purchased as a Christmas gift for my brother, sister-in-law and their eight children. I was looking to replace our old DVD player that had stopped working. Of course, it stopped working right after Christmas! Who has any money left then? My search began and was surprised to find the Coby DVD-514 DVD Player for such a low price. I was hesitant, but decided to try it. We love it!! It is so compact, 1/3 the size of our old one. Works like a charm always. Nice credit card sized remote. In fact, we bought another one for our bedroom! So within 2 weeks we had bought two.
