If you can make it through!
Cate Nightengale is a single mother of two adorable precocious four year old boys. She has relocated her little family to Trail Stop Idaho from Seattle. There, she runs a Bed and Breakfast that barely makes ends meet because people rarely visit the small town. When a guest staying at the Bed and Breakfast disappears, leaving behind his suitcase and shaving supplies, two men show up to search the place bringing trouble to the small town and drawing everyone into a dangerous game. Cate realizes there is more to this story than just a man trying to skip on his bill. The whole town is drawn into a dangerous game. Cate and the local handyman, Calvin Harris, are tangled in a terrifying adventure that has everyone’s lives at risk. But there is more to Cal than meets the eye. He is not the ... He is not the shy handyman she thought he was. This book had a great plot idea that drew you in just by reading the cover. However, the book was very slow to start and had some big frustrations. The first half of the book had little dialogue and not having the two main characters talk until half way into the book was a big frustration. I started getting excited again towards the end when Cate and Cal decide to climb some cliffs to go for help. It seemed like the author had gotten back on track, however the excitement was short lived and before you knew it the whole ordeal was over. The book was still a good read... if you could make it to chapter four or five. I’m a big fan of Linda Howard and await her next book. This was not among my favorite of her books.

I am a big Linda Howard fan and will buy anything with her name on it. But this was only the second book of hers, that I was disappointed in. All the Queen's Men was also a disappointment to me, as I found it very "dry". Cover of the Night was slow to start. There is a lot of background on Cate, our heroine. It does explain why she & her two cute and into-everything-twins, relocated to the "middle of nowhere". I thought giving her two precocious twins was a good plot idea, and there is some very humorous dialog. At first, I assumed they would be part of the reason she would be endangered. But very conveniently, they are whisked away by their grandmother for a visit, just before "all hell" breaks loose. I did NOT find our hero, handyman Cal very compelling. His character ... I am a big Linda Howard fan and will buy anything with her name on it. But this was only the second book of hers, that I was disappointed in. His character development came too late (for me) in the story, to muster much interest for me. I think service guys can be very sexy, don't get me wrong... Sex came very late in the book (almost like a builder's final punch list of jobs to complete) rather than because of long smoldering and well built passions (on both parts). While Cal had been interested in Cate for several years, she hadn't even really looked at him, as other than just a helpful service person. Of course, this is explained in that she "shut down" after the death of her husband. However, descriptions of Cal (to make him more appealing or romantic) are a long time in coming. When the story finally does get on track (late in the book) - as they rock climb their way to get help for an entire town which is being held hostage, Cate gets injured & has to turn back alone & Cal goes on for help. Ultimately, Cal does all the saving, even though women are (now) being depicted & allowed in REAL LIFE to be more strong (mentally & physically). Cate gets to do next to nothing, other than figure out what the bad guys want and instinctively get her kids out of danger. Cal wraps everything up (with his previous military training) and the unintended help of one bad guy, with a vendetta. So, Cate now sees Cal in a whole new light and of course, since he is great with her kids, ...you know the rest. Ho-hum. My advice, if you want to read it, wait until it is in paperback. Nothing about this book lives up to some of her best, like Son of The Morning or Midnight Rainbow. (Unlike those just mentioned, I won't be keeping my copy of this latest book.)

Her main character, Cate, is a single mom with two four year old boys, twins. They are a handful, and there are some very funny scenes that sound quite believable. Cate runs a Bed and Breakfast Inn in a very small town called Trail Stop, Idaho. The local handyman, Cal, keeps her house in repairs and later in the book when the crises begin to happen, he turns out to be quite a lot more than a handyman. It ends well, and it is a good story. Linda Howard has another successful novel here. It's a love story, a survival story, a family story, a community story and a good vs. evil story. Well done. Used book
Expected book to be "used." Cover had something spilled on it and looked kinda nasty. My used books don't look like that. Glad I didn't pay more for it. Book itself was interesting.

Linda Howard does it again
Lots of twists and turns in this modern-day story. Again, Howard introduces heroes "to die for", and heroines in need of protection and TLC. Howard fans will enjoy this great read.
