Product Information

Return to a darker Oz with Gregory Maguire. In A Lion Among Men, the third volume in Maguire's acclaimed, New York Times bestselling series The Wicked Years, a fuller, more complex Cowardly Lion is brought to life and gets to tell his remarkable tale. "Entertaining....The author mixes some relatively weighty existential themes'the search for self, faith, redemption'into his whimsical story line. [A] darkly enchanting saga" (Publishers Weekly), Engrossing...Maguire is a masterful storyteller with an uncanny flair for mixing political and personal while exploring what it means-and what it costs-to be accepted in a society., Much to savor, laugh at, and think about. . . . A page-turning fantasy and a timely political allegory., The minute you open A Lion Among Men, you're back in Maguire's exquisitely detailed environment, caught up once again in his geography, his characters, his worldview, touched anew by the loneliness that lurks in the heart of all things., Maguire's work is melodic, symphonic and beautiful; it is dejected and biting and brave. . . . In fabulous details and self-mocking language, Maguire displays his gift for whimsical portrayals of the broken, the powerless, the hopeless, the bad., This Oz goes far beyond L. Frank Baum's; it's as surreal as a dream, but as immaculately and impeccably detailed as history. Maguire's wizardlike grasp over every aspect of this reinvented land rivals classic literary landscapes like Tolkien's Middle Earth and Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County., The third book in Maguire's Wicked Years is at once funny, charming, harrowing, bleak and incredibly beautiful., As usual, Maguire, a seasoned fabulist, populates his version of Oz with a cast of utterly fantastical characters who must face their own inner demons while tumult and uncertainty rages around them. An absolute must-read for fans of this ever-evolving dark fairy tale., A New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal, Denver Post, and USA Today bestseller -- "Maguire's work is melodic, symphonic and beautiful; it is dejected and biting and brave. . . . A lion’s life is not easy.

I love everything by Gregory Maguire but his Oz books are my favorite. A Lion Among Men gives the “true” background story of why the cowardly lion became a coward. I won’t spoil the story but would say he had a very hard life and was no cub by the time he met Dorothy.

  • OUR WICKED COWARDLY COURAGE

Gregory Maguire, the author of Wicked, Son of a Witch and now A Lion Among Men has successfully completed volume three in the Wicked Years and oh what a volume it is! It's fantastic! We have all wondered why the cowardly lion was so cowardly. We find out the reason why and much much more about Elphaba(the Wicked Witch of the West)her possible son Liir, the munchkins, the mysterious Yackle, the Woo (Wizard of Oz) and other central characters. This volume appears to really go nowhere and we wonder what it has to do with the big picture- Will the Grimmerie fall into the wrong hands and where is it, will Liir, Candle and the child resurface, will The Wicked Witch of the West return? BUT, when you dig deeper and read between the lines we find important clues. When the Cowardly Lion ...

  • Meh-ish

I like the re-telling of the original series and it's definitely easier to read (on a scale of boring to tolerable). I do, however, enjoy how Maguire skirts around sexual encounters in any of his books. His endings are always a bit unsavory and never seem very resolute, not that you need resolution or an absolute ending to a book for it to be good, but something about them always leaves you wanting. My guess is that he's just encouraging fan fiction.

  • Captures the books content excellently!

I have read the othe 2 books of this series, Wicked and Son of a Witch, and this book follows the other 2 excellently. When I read Wicked I always wondered what happened to the baby lion cub introduced to Elphaba while she was in school. This book answers all the questions I had and readers find out why the lion is so cowardly. I'm ready to learn more about the scarecrow and tin man.
