About this product

Product Information

LE DIVORCE, based on the novel by Diane Johnson, is a contemporary Merchant/Ivory production that explores the fundamental differences between Americans and the French, especially in matters of the heart and manners. Isabel (Kate Hudson) is a brash, outspoken Californian who travels to Paris to help her pregnant expatriate sister Roxeanne (Naomi Watts). Once there she finds that Roxeanne's cheating husband (Melvil Poupaud) has abandoned her for his sexy mistress. Determined to help Roxeanne, Isabel settles in and quickly succumbs to the charms of Paris, including its men. She embarks on her own affair with Edgar (Thierry Lhermitte), the married brother of Suzanne de Persand (Leslie Caron), Roxeanne's bourgeois mother-in-law, and falls into the stereotypical life of a French mistress, receiving expensive Hermés gifts, and undergoing a chic cultural makeover. However, Suzanne quickly learns of the affair and is enraged, claiming that Americans don't know how to have proper, temporary affairs. Upon the arrival of Isabel and Roxeanne's typically American parents (Stockard Channing and Sam Waterson), the cultural divide becomes deeper as the two families battle it out over love, marriage, infidelity, fortune and ultimately: divorce.

  • The Worst Movie EVER

My review of this movie is going to have to be as senseless and scattered as the movie itself. Kate Hudson goes to Paris to help out her pregnant sister (Naomi Watts), whose husband SUDDENLY leaves her without a word, on the day of Kate's arrival. Kate immediately falls into bed with some random guy for no apparent reason and then 5 minutes later begins an affair with a rich older man who gives her a $25,000 Hermes bag, again for no discernable reason. Somewhere in there she is being stalked/harassed/threatened with death by her sister's husband's lover's husband. K, wait, that was her sister's husband's lover's husband. No seriously, this movie still gets worse. The Naomi Watts character attempts suicide at about 8 months of pregnancy and upon waking up from near death begins giddily ...

  • Backdrop of Paris is lovely, truely enchanting film.

I find myself watching this film over and over. Every time I feel like I'm in Paris. The apartment, the alure of art, and typically French love affairs. The intermingling of books, romance, money, and flaky people. Its a good story based on good writing, which always makes for great films. Its great for a rainy afternoon, enchanting slice of France. MR / update, I just listened to the unabriged book on cd. Wow, a completely different story, maybe I am bias, but the book was excellent, but the movie was much better. My hats off to the script writer, because the movie is a better story. Any budding script writer should read/listen to the book, then view the movie. This overlooked movie really has depth to it. Blessings, Max Rainet. **If you found this information at all helpful, ...

  • If you have lived in France for a month or more this should ring true! Fabulous cast!

I read a lot of negative reviews about ” le divorce“. I am guessing they are from people who I have not “lived“ in France. After I spent over seven months there besides being flag to be home years later when I saw this It definitely brought back memories...I can see how some people didn’t like it the translation was not great but the details from the way the windows open to saying ”mais bien sur” to everything was spot on...brought me back minus a $12,000 bag! 😘 double cheek ”bisous”

  • Not your usual garden variety romantic comedy...

I agree with another reviewer that this is more a Romantic Drama than a Romantic Comedy. It's a story about a purse...nope, it's about a family heirloom painting...no a divorce...no - it's about art...or maybe about sisterhood...no, wait it's about french culture...or just a story about life's little (and big) ups and downs. Whichever story line catches your fancy, you can expect good acting and action. I thought Glenn Close was wonderful in the movie, in addition to Kate and Naomi. The husband is a bum and his family a real piece of work, but everyone gets what they deserve, in the end!

  • The Art of an Entertaining Divorce

Ah, Paree!!!! Captures the spirit and ambiance of Paris as I remember it! The story was artfully done and the last a5 minutes of the tale of the divorce are absolutely first-rate! Actors are quite believeable!
