About this product

Product Information

After stunning audiences with his ferociously personal, gritty depictions of masculinity in WHO'S THAT KNOCKING AT MY DOOR? (1968) and MEAN STREETS (1973), Martin Scorsese bade farewell to his native New York City in order to direct this delightfully bittersweet portrait of an unflappable single mother. The Oscar-winning Ellen Burstyn is flat-out marvelous as Alice Hyatt, a newly widowed woman who hopes to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a singer. Fleeing her small New Mexico town with her 11-year-old son, Tommy (the hilariously spunky Alfred Lutter), Alice promises not to stop until they reach her hometown of Monterey, California. But after a near disaster in Phoenix (compliments of the fiery Harvey Keitel), the pair settles in Tucson, where Alice grudgingly takes a job as a waitress. It's there where she meets the irresistible David (Kris Kristofferson), a warmhearted customer who won't take no for an answer. At the same time, Tommy befriends Audrey (Jodie Foster), a young tomboy with a mischievous streak.Scorsese's realistic modern fairytale (as evidenced by the film's opening ode to THE WIZARD OF OZ) breathes with a hard-edged tenderness that is a wonder to behold. Robert Getchell's script deftly balances comedy and drama, as well as reality and fantasy, creating a distinctive tone that has inspired numerous imitators (TUMBLEWEEDS, ANYWHERE BUT HERE). ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE is that rare gift, a film that reflects the era in which it was shot but never feels dated.

  • ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE

What a great movie. This film was the basis for the sitcom ALICE that starred Linda Lavin in the title role. We actually see Alice's husband Don in this film before his truck accident, scenes later. Also, as shown in the 4th or 5th season of ALICE, we see the station wagon driving down the road in Arizona, that scene that is shown in almost every season opening episode, is taken from this film, there's the scene when the original Tommy (Alice's son, played by Alfred Lutter) thinks he's gonna be sick, so Alice goes to pull to the side of the road, that's the shot we see in the opening title sequence in ALICE the tv series. I recommend you get ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE if you wanna see the film that was the basis the 1976-1985 sitcom ALICE and also if you're an Ellen Burstyn fan like ...

  • Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore

One of Martin Scorsese's more obscure and early films, "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" is an amazing blend of cinematic craftsmanship and storytelling. Ellen Burstyn is superb in her Academy Award winning role as Alice, an aspiring singer who travels alongside her son to Monterrey in order to find a suitable job and decent life for her and her family. On the way she discovers more about herself, gaining the confidence and independence she always needed. A superb classic. Highly recommend!!!

  • Excellent Film

  • Alice Doesn't Live here Anymore( DVD, 2004)

***MINIMAL SPOILERS*** Alice Hyatt( Ellen Burstyn) is a widow with a young son ( Alfred Lutter) wind up in Tuscon, Arizona. Alice had longed to be a Singer in the cool, hip spot of Monterrey, California, but the cards of fate life has dealt her has her grounded everywhere but Monterey. Alice takes the job as a waitress at Mel and Ruby's Diner, and Mel( Vic Tayback) is a widower with a crew with distinctive personalities. Alice meets a customer( Kris Kristofferson) and things are not going to be the same ever again. Or can they be? This film morphed the popular comedy sitcom "Alice".
