You have to be Italian!
This movie is a show by Italians to reveal... "What kind of people are we?" Anthony Quinn, Half Mexican, Half Indian, half Irish...Makes for a believable old Italian uncle all of us can remember. Drunk all the time, proud, bumbling...he's magnificent in this role. The rest of the actors and actresses are okay in their roles. Ana Magnani as the italian housewife...barefoot and in the kitchen. Sergio Franchi acting rather than singing. Maria Cardinale, good performance. ...So why do I own a bootleg copy rather than the real thing? Because when I bought it on Ebay, they didn't say it was bootleg. The real thing costs dearly, and I'm thinking of buying it some day. Please folks, when you have bootleg, say it! I bought this as a Christmas gift for my sister-in-law, who just loves this movie. Didn't realized how hard it would be to find and how much money copies were going for. I ended up buying a product that looked great to give as a gift, one that my sister-in-law indicated played great, and I was very satisfied with the price.

Great book and great movie, unfortunately not available in DVD. VHS is hardly a desirable format, but, considering how good the movie is, tape is certainly better than nothing.

This is a very fuuny movie especially if you are Italian or know and love an Italian. My mother-in-law, Rosie, who is 84, watches this movie 2-3 times per week. Anything that can bring a little joy to her is a blessing.
