Herzog's documentary on the Chauvet Cave paintings
This film was made by Werner Herzog in 2010 and released in the U.K in 2011 . Though well reviewed on release, I feel this documentary stands on its subject matter rather than through any particular cinematic skill of Werner Herzog, (though he is a film director I greatly admire). However as the film was apparently shot in 3D and given the subject of the documentary are visual images, this extra dimension must have enhanced the cinematic experience significantly, however all I can review here is this DVD issue in 2D. The subject is the paintings in the Chauvet Caves in central, southern France, found on the Ardeche River near the Pont d’Arc. These cave paintings are similar to their famous counterparts a little further north in the Dordogne and the Lot regions. However these particular ... The subject is the paintings in the Chauvet Caves in central, southern France, found on the Ardeche River near the Pont d’Arc. These cave paintings are similar to their famous counterparts a little further north in the Dordogne and the Lot regions. However these particular paintings are believed to be between 10000 and 30000 years old. This makes them the oldest caves paintings in known history and some 10000 years older than all other known paintings. The images clearly portray bison, mammoths, rhinos amongst others animals, and indicate the different fauna that must have roamed this area of France in a significantly different climate that obviously existed during this relatively close date to our own history. The quality of the paintings and the circumstances of their creation are fascinating. These caves were only discovered in 1994. Access has only ever been by geologists, scientist and art historians. To protect them, the environment is controlled and access severely restricted. These caves will never be open to the public. So Werner Herzog has created for us, in this film, something of a historical document. Through this film we are able to see images otherwise severely restricted and inaccessible. The film is documentary is style, with interviews and reflections by a variety of scientists and academics, some of whom, as well as providing empirical information, also indulge in philosophical reflection. But as I say, the subject of the film is most definitely the star. If you have any interest in art history, anthropology, social history, this film is a must . My real major gripe about the film is the music, written by one Ernst Reijseger, presumably commissioned for the film. Personally I hated it. I found it highly obtrusive, distracting and completely inappropriate to the mood or atmosphere of the visual images. It was very “time present” for me, whereas I longed for something far more “timeless”. However musical tastes are very personal and subjective. Others may like it, or may not be as sensitive to it as I. However, whatever the soundtrack, just a chance to see these wonderful images is well worth having to put up with this aural distraction. Avoid Caves of Forgotten Dreams
Only half the film showed the painted cave. The rest of the film was padding. A much better account of the cave can be found in the book: CHAUVET CAVE / The Art of Earliest Times edited by Jean Clottes and translated by Paul G Bahn 2003 It was noticable that our enemies, the Germans, spoke English whilst our friends, the French, only spoke French. I wish I could get my money back.

would be bette rin 3d
ascinating film but this particular dvd is not the 3d version,so could not appreciate how the drawings relate to the texture and folds of the rock surface
