Not as bad as it may seem
From what I have read in other user's comments, I had the feeling, this book would be bad for reading. I will either start hating Bing Crosby for what he did to his sons, or I will think that Gary is a stupid juvenile self-centered guy who wants to make money from his father's fame and his book is horrible to read. Well, my mind went nor way. To those who call this book "a child abuse", well, I didn't see it in it. If the rest of the family says true (nearly everybody said, their life had not been THAT hard), Bing might have been strict, but that's all. Gary talks about more or less five moments when he was beaten by his dad, but yes, he had done things, he shouldn't have had. Once he sneaked out of his room with his brothers in the night (when they should have been sleeping) to his ... Later he played a wise guy in the school, he was making fun of the subject in front of a teacher and got into the fights with other kids. It was quite clear, his dad didn't like it. I have to say that during the reading, I had a great feeling that the most of the family problems was done by Gary himself. His dad asked him to explain why he had done it many times, but Gary never answered. When his dad wanted to teach him a lesson and give him advise, Gary called it "moralizing" and didn't care what "the old man" was saying. Once his dad told him, it was his life and it was up to him what he would do, Gary writes, his dad didn't care about him. However, there are plenty of evidence, he did. Gary himself comes with a dozen of examples when his dad helped him or overlooked his oversteps on purpose. When Gary used to sneak out of a ball game or a cinema to have a sex with a prostitute, his dad knew it, but didn't say a word. When he lied his dad about coming home early although he arrived in the morning, his dad pretended that he didn't know about anything. When he lied his dad and told him, he wasn't drinking, Bing knew, it wasn't true, but he didn't punish him. When Gary needed to go to a clinic because of his drinking, his father paid it, but didn't say it, because he knew that his son wouldn't have accepted it. When Gary left the school and had no job, his dad thought up the story, he had to leave to Europe and asked his son to take over his show for a few weeks. And so on. And so on. And so on. There are many examples like that in the 2nd part of the book. If you get over Gary's neverending complaining, you can see that Bing wanted to help his son and talk with him as an equal, but Gary was so pig-headed, he couldn't see it. And that's it, that's all I can say about the book. I am, in no way, sorry, I have read it. I liked it and read thru those 200 pages in three days, which might show, I enjoyed it. However, I wasn't able to stand by Gary the most of the time. Yes, his dad was strict. He was not the best father regarding the fact, he didn't have much time, wasn't able to show his inner feelings and probably came home tired from the amount of the people who had wanted to talk with him that day. But I can't get over the feeling, he could be a nice guy if Gary gave him a chance. (The review was written by a person who isn't a native English speaker, so please excuse any grammar mistakes in the text above.)

GREAT INSIGHT AS WHAT NOT TO DO AS A PARENT
Any parent who believes in corporal punishment, strict discipline, without being approachable, would benefit immensely by reading this biography. Bing Crosby (Gary’s father) most likely grew up in "Spare the rod and spoil the child" era. By the end of Gary’s biography, Bing tries to repeatedly repair the damage he did in raising his 4 boys by numerous attempts to establish an bond between parent and his adult children, but by then it's way too late. Gary Crosby gives in-depth insight on what it's like to be a small child and not have your emotional needs met while growing up in an environment where one parent is an alcoholic and the other is world renown (with very little privacy and strict discipline). Gary has now passed away, but he did future generations of parents a huge favor by ... Can't miss this one if you're interested in the Crosby family story
Very compelling book, especially about how different Bing was in his professional life versus Bing as a father. He didn't want to spoil his kids, so he went too far the other way and always told Gary he was nothing special, how he did stupid things, etc. And that's not to discount the beatings/whippings. Highly recommended! Got for a great deal too.
