About this product

Product Information

Blake Edwards's disturbing adaptation of J.P. Miller's PLAYHOUSE 90 story, starring Jack Lemmon as Joe Clay, remains an anomaly in a body of work largely devoted to comedy. Clay, a San Francisco public relations man who likes to hoist a few, meets secretary Kirsten Arnesen (Lee Remick), who doesn't drink, and after a short time they marry. After a few more months, Kirsten is able to put away as much liquor as her husband. As the years pass, Joe loses one job after another and his wife neglects their child until he begins to realize that both of them are alcoholics. They move into her father's (Charles Bickford) nursery to dry out, but following a couple of weeks of sobriety, they go on a binge. Joe nearly destroys a greenhouse in a fanatical search for a bottle and ends up in hospital ward. Former alcoholic Jim Hungerford (Jack Klugman) tries to persuade Joe to join an organization ro help deal with his problem, but Kirsten coaxes him back to the bottle. Lemmon is at his best and Remick has rarely been better in this shattering portrait of a couple consumed by addiction. Refreshingly free of the moralistic clichés of this genre, its depiction of the glamor enjoyed by drinking in previous decades throws light on the ease with which many were able to slide into oblivion.

A tremendous movie that was out in theatres, they have done a wonderfful job re-mastering the sound and graphics. The movie is so true to life, about the disease of alcoholism, in someway or another, after counseling families, the alcoholic or addict by the thousands. They have hit the nail on the head!! The reason to me it is the story of the scenes behind Alcoholism is the fact that Alcoholics Anonymous members, helped in the story and added much input. Today now some fourty seven years later, in real life it is still the same story that is going on in households today by the 100,000 estimated, that are considered chronic. Needless to say, The movie was excellent and in my field of work, I can not believe that I have not viewed it before, many told me about it or quoted lines out of ...

  • Days of Wine and Roses

I love this movie. It's really old but it's great. I think this movie characterizes the disorder (alcoholism) very well, analyzing the concept, symptoms, consequences and treatment very clearly. Furthermore, the role of the professionals was also well exemplified. The characters met all the criteria necessary for the diagnosis.Excellent actors! I bought it because I need it for a school project.

Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick were at the top of their game, this is a classic and in black in white too, oh yeah! They don't make em like this anymore. Charles Bickford was powerful as well and you could feel his pain at the realization of seeing his daughters descent into alcoholism. He had every right to be angry, she never "touched a drop" until she met Joe Clay (Jack Lemmon). I could not understand the connection that Jack Klugman made between being passionate about eating chocolate and being a potential alcoholic. Still I love this movie. The performances were all topnotch!!!

  • Day of Wine and Roses DVD-New

I knew about this movie when it first came out in 1962. Filmed in black and white. It touched me then and it touched me now. They just don't make movies like this anymore. Great plot, great acting. Perfect for anyone that is touched by alcoholism in their family or working with such. It's important to know the past to break the chain. Jack Lemmon was perfect! This movie is not for the tender heart that can't take a reality check!! We all have choices and only we can change our destiny. Highly recommended.

  • Great movie

A wonderfuly depressing story about a couple who's life and relationship are destroyed by substance abuse. It's entertaining enough to be enjoyed by anyone and yet realistic enough to be enjoyed by people who have been there.
