About this product

Product Information

Jhumpa Lahiri's debut story collection, Interpreter of Maladies , took the literary world by storm when it won the Pulitzer Prize in 2000. Fans who flocked to her stories will be captivated by her best-selling first novel, now in paperback for the first time. The Namesake is a finely wrought, deeply moving family drama that illuminates this acclaimed author's signature themes: the immigrant experience, the clash of cultures, the tangled ties between generations. The Namesake takes the Ganguli family from their tradition-bound life in Calcutta through their fraught transformation into Americans. On the heels of an arranged wedding, Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli settle in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Ashoke does his best to adapt while his wife pines for home. When their son, Gogol, is born, the task of naming him betrays their hope of respecting old ways in a new world. And we watch as Gogol stumbles along the first-generation path, strewn with conflicting loyalties, comic detours, and wrenching love affairs. With empathy and penetrating insight, Lahiri explores the expectations bestowed on us by our parents and the means by which we come to define who we are.

I decided to buy this book because I kept hearing about it and I found out that they are making a movie of the book with Kal Penn starring as Gogul Ganguli. I knoew from an overview of the movie that I had to read this book. I bought it and I was just floored. It made me sad that he wanted to have a totally American life but when his father dies alone in a hospital in Cleveland, it just killed me. That was so sad. That was when he really started to grow to realize his roots. It was almost like sleeping in his fathers bed was the trick. He came home to take care of his mother and went with his mother and sister to Bangladesh for the funeral. I cried when he decided to leave his wife and when he came home and found the book that he had never even opened. That was the real killer. It made me ...

  • A Profound Story of Blending of Cultures

What I enjoyed most about this novel was the balance between a traditional culture and becoming acculturated to a new cultural. I think this book could be especially interesting for first generation Americans and/or bicultural readers. However, I think the overall theme of acceptance (both from others and oneself) can be powerful for readers from a variety of backgrounds.
