About this product

Product Information

David Hall
The 1913-D Type I Buffalo is much rarer than the 1913 Philadelphia. It's about 5 to 10 times rarer in mint state and probably 20 times rare in circulated grades. Still, the 1913-D Type is one of the more available early date Buffalos. This is generally a well struck issue. Luster typically ranges from dull to bright satiny.

  • Semi-key date coin, nice condition

1913 Buffalos were the first year of mintage for this coin. The mint quickly identified the "raised mound" the Bison (Black Diamond) was standing on as a wear spot. This was the location "FIVE CENTS" was struck, and especially given the history of the Liberty Nickel being gold plated and passed off as a 5 dollar piece, they desired no repeat. The coin was redesigned in mid-year with a recessed area, further protecting the "FIVE CENTS" designation. Coins struck on the "raised mound" (1913 only) are called "Type I" while those on the recessed area are called "Type II". There were therefore, 6 different 1913 coins, the Type I and Type II each of the Philadelphia mint, Denver Mint and San Francisco mint. The 1913, 1913-D and 1913-S (Type I) all carry a small premium over other coins in the ...

  • 1913 buff

Almost every date is a "key" date with buffalo nickels. This 1913 wasn't needed for my collection but the BIN price was so good I couldn't pass it by. When I was a kid there were still 36's and 37's in circulation but finding a 13 just didn't happen.
