A delightful example in the genre of 'rule breakers having adventures,' its righteous bandits on the edge of society join the company of knights errant, ronin, Robin Hood, and the outlaws of the American West. Don't let its age or its pedigree scare you off. (It's one of the commonly grouped four classic novels of Chinese literature.) -- Men's Health|9780804840958|
Synopsis
Based upon the historical bandit Song Jiang and his companions, this Chinese equivalent of the English classic Robin Hood and His Merry Men is an epic tale of rebellion against tyranny and has been thrilling and inspiring readers for hundreds of years. This edition of the classic J. H. Jackson translation features a new preface and introduction by Edwin Lowe, which gives the history of the book and puts the story into perspective for modern readers. First translated into English by Pearl S. Buck in 1933 as All Men Are Brothers, the original edition of the J.H. Jackson translation appeared under the title The Water Margin in 1937. In this updated edition, Edwin Lowe addresses many of the shortcomings found in the original J.H. Jackson translation, and replaces the original grit and flavor of Shuihui Zhuan found in Chinese versions, including the sexual seduction, explicit descriptions of brutality and barbarity, and the profane voices of the thieving, scheming, drinking, fighting, pimping lower classes of Song Dynasty China. Similarly, the Chinese deities, Bodhisattvas, gods and demons have reclaimed their true names, as has the lecherous, over-sexed and ill-fated Ximen Qing. All of which was sanitized out when first published in 1937. While Chinese in origin, the themes of The Water Margin are universal enough that it has served as a source of inspiration for numerous movies, television shows and video games up to the present day., Based upon the historical bandit Song Jiang and his companions, this Chinese equivalent of the English classic Robin Hood and His Merry Men is an epic tale of rebellion against tyranny and has been thrilling and inspiring readers for hundreds of years. This edition of the classic J. H. Jackson translation brings a story that has been inspiring readers for hundreds of years to life for modern audiences. It features a new preface and introduction by Edwin Lowe, which gives the history of the book and puts the story into perspective for today's readers. First translated into English by Pearl S. Buck in 1933 as All Men Are Brothers , the original edition of the J.H. Jackson translation appeared under the title The Water Margin in 1937. In this updated edition, Edwin Lowe addresses many of the shortcomings found in the original J.H. Jackson translation, and reinserts the grit and flavor of Shuihui Zhuan found in the original Chinese versions, including the sexual seduction, explicit descriptions of brutality, and the profane voices of the lower classes of Song Dynasty China. Similarly, the Chinese deities, Bodhisattvas, gods and demons have reclaimed their true names, as has the lecherous, ill-fated Ximen Qing. This 70-chapter book includes much that was sanitized out of the 1937 publication, giving Anglophone readers the most complete picture to date of this classic Chinese novel. While Chinese in origin, the themes of The Water Margin are so universal that they have served as a source of inspiration for numerous movies, television shows and video games up to the present day.

- h***r (18)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseI haven’t finished the book quite yet, but it’s so good so far. It’s been on my list to read since I’m a huge fan of the suikoden series and this book is just a masterpiece (although there’s a ton of people to follow). Great condition, great value, top tier appearance.
- s***a (22)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseI purchased multiple books from this seller, and this was a great experience! Each book was listed at a great price! Everything was shipped out quickly, and arrived only a few days after that. The book was packaged appropriately as well. The condition of the book was even better than what was listed, as it looked almost brand new, rather than the “very good” that was stated. I absolutely would buy from this seller again!

- b***b (225)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseThis is a bookseller you can rely on. Paper Cuts is not my first purchase from them & they never let me down. Everything about them is positive. This book is brand new (!), even though it was listed as like new. Literally, brand new! They may have listed it as such due to the remainder mark - so slight it looks like a red dot. The quality, value and appearance of 'Paper Cuts' - all 5 (out of 5) stars. Great, strong, secure packaging. Book arrived on time. THANK YOU bellwetherbooks_usa!
