Shaolin - Big Budget Martial Arts Entertainment
China is now probably the last bastion of big budget action movies with a large cast of human extras rather than their CGI counterparts. It seems to take place in the 1900's where a feudal warlord general (Andy Lau) mows down peasants like wheat with little regard for human life. The only help for the people comes from a temple full of Shaolin monks. When the general's plans go awry, he suffers a personal tragedy that turns him toward a righteous path. This change occurs too conveniently to be truely believable. The evil is now passed down to his subordinate (Nicholas Tse.) Jackie Chan's part is slightly elevated above a cameo as a monk/cook who only gets to showcase a little of his martial arts skills. The acting reminds me of the silent movie era where exaggerated gestures made up for ... Heavy on Buddhism references. Very, very interesting and totally engaging. The characters are very endearing - and also very repulsive. Very good movie. Not for kids.
