"DuPrau's first foray into fiction creates a realistic post-apocalyptic world where everyone has lived underground for so long that they assume it has always been that way. . . . Starred Review,Publishers Weekly "Thanks to full-blooded characters every bit as compelling as the plot, Lina and Doon's search parallels the universal adolescent quest for answers. An electric debut!" Starred Review,Kirkus Reviews "Well-paced, this contains a satisfying mystery, a breathtaking escape over rooftops in darkness, a harrowing journey into the unknown, and cryptic messages for readers to decipher. The likeable protagonists are not only courageous but also believably flawed by human pride. The cliffhanger ending will leave readers clamoring for the next installment." Starred Review,Voice of Youth Advocates "While Ember is colorless and dark, the book itself is rich with description. DuPrau uses the puzzle, suspenseful action, and lots of evil characters to entice readers into the story. They will find the teen characters believable and gutsy. Part mystery, part adventure story." The Horn Book Magazine "The device of a hidden letter, complete with missing words, is used with such disarming forthrightness that readers will be eagerly deciphering it right alongside Doon and Lina." • Good Read

This was not a book I would have selected on my own. My daughter was assigned to read it in school. That is why I purchased. Was outside of what I would have picked on my own thinking I would enjoy the read. Thanks to her class reading it my horizons were broadened even more. This was a very good book. I highly recommend it.

  • The beginning of a great new series!

This is the first book in DuPrau's new series, and in it a boy and girl realize that they're living underground after an apocalyptic-type event. For many years, a group of people living in the City of Ember have survived on limited amounts of food and luxuries, and things like light and lightbulbs are starting to become scarce. Confused as to why the problem can't be remedied, the boy starts looking into the problem. After a few clues from the city's original founders are discovered, the boy and girl are lead to a river, and they soon float out of the ground and into the real world. I loved this book when I read it, and every sixth grader I've recommended it to has loved it as well. It's an idea so strange and different that one can't help but entertain the idea of a city underground. ...

  • Overshadowed, but not outdone by Harry Potter

After having seen the movie with my children, I got this hardcover for my 9 yr. old daughter. Having enjoyed the film, she still found more than enough difference in the book to love it. She tore through the book and has begun the second in the series, "The People of Sparks". "City of Ember", the first in a four book series, is more in-depth, different and complete than the film. Reading the book is not duplicating the movie. The book stands as its own entity. The film did not, I believe, enjoy the success of Harry Potter or Percy Jackson, but is a wonderful series to have your young, eager reader tackle. The characters are three dimensional, the story, though fantastical, is born of a realistic/real-life scenario and while not "babied-down" reading for kids, it is accessible AND ...
