The best collection of the last 100 years
I grew up reading the poems in this volume, and they informed my entire education. Some of the treasures of the English language are in here. The collection is not limited to American poets; rather, the editrix was a columnist for a magazine or newspaper in the 1930's and collected some of the poetry most requested by her readership over the years of her tenure. Together, it makes a fine collection of important works, with a few fun treasures thrown in.I grew up reading the poems in this volume, and they informed my entire education. The BEST Poetry book ever!
I have had my copy of this book since I was about 8 years old (I'm 47 now). It has a great mix of all kinds of poetry. Great stories - "Willie and Annie's Prayer" - my very favorite Christmas Story! Poems to make you think and consider - "It Isn't the Church It's You" or "It Isn't the Town It's You." Love stories - "He and She" I read this love story many times and fell in love with it over and over again through the different stages of my life. There are famous authors as well as unknown. I was looking for a good mix of poetry. Something that wasn't dominated by one author or subject and I found it in this book, The Best Loved Poems of the American People. The topics of these poems range from ones that tell a story to love poems to ones about biblical topics. It includes many famous authors like Edgar Allen Poe, Rudyard Kipling and the ever present Unknown Author; as well as many lesser known authors. This is a great book for anyone's shelf and especially for those who want to brush up on their poetry.I was looking for a good mix of poetry. Beautiful poetry in the American style. Easy to read but very meaningful verse. A lovely introduction to poetry for the novice and enjoyable for the experienced reader as well.
