About this product

Product Information

The national bestseller from the acclaimed author of The Wives of Henry VIII. France's beleaguered queen, Marie Antoinette, wrongly accused of uttering the infamous "Let them eat cake," was the subject of ridicule and curiosity even before her death; she has since been the object of debate and speculation and the fascination so often accorded tragic figures in history. Married in mere girlhood, this essentially lighthearted, privileged, but otherwise unremarkable child was thrust into an unparalleled time and place, and was commanded by circumstance to play a significant role in history. Antonia Fraser's lavish and engaging portrait of Marie Antoinette, one of the most recognizable women in European history, excites compassion and regard for all aspects of her subject, immersing the reader not only in the coming-of-age of a graceful woman, buaimedt also in the unraveling of an era.

Reviews
"Fascinating . . . the court at Versailles comes alive." The Washington Post "Colorful, fluently narrated. . . . A touching, psychologically believable portrait." The Wall Street Journal "Absorbing as ever. Fraser's blend of insight and research persuade us that this unfortunate queen deserves neither the vilification nor the idealization she has received." • FRASER BY CAMPBELL

This is an extremely well documented book by an established writer. I have not finished it yet since I read only a few pages at night in bed. There are almost 500 pages --- I have read about half. There is nothing missing and the research is impeccable. A very sad story -- I almost want t skip the tearful end of this lovely woman, but it is story too well told to miss. The movie with Norma shearer and Tyrone Power was based on Stefan Zweig's biography and tells the story emotionally. I heartily recommend this book --- a tale about the tragedy of a French queen, without a care in the world. brought to a heartbreaking end by the fierce vengeance of the impoverished citizens during the French Revolution.

  • Marie Antoinette

I "personally" like to read about historical figures. I liked this book as I felt it was written with research behind it. I have read other books by Antonia Fraser and feel she is a good author. I like the color photo she has added to give the subjects a reality. I would rate this book between excellent and good.

  • a very well made book,a must to read.

great ,well made a must for any lovers of old france and that era. a good purchase and a well made book, super quality. Je le recommende hautement.
