My brother bought a Safariland Comp-2 speedloader for his S&W .357 revolver and liked it so much he talked me into buying one for my S&W .44 magnum model 29. Unfortunately, the only 44 magnum speedloader Safariland currently makes for the model 29 is the Comp-1 J-S5. The difference between the Comp-1 and the Comp-2 is significant. The first problem I encountered was in trying to load the rounds into the Comp-1. While carefully following the directions, I found it extremely difficult to rotate the grossly undersized plastic knob to lock in the rounds. The knob is so small in diameter and so slippery to try and hold on to, that it took numerous attempts to get it to lock in the rounds. Even then, when I picked up the loader one or two rounds would fall out. You practically need a pair of ... Even then, when I picked up the loader one or two rounds would fall out. You practically need a pair of pliers to fully grasp and rotate the knob. I also own a .44 magnum HKS speedloader. The Comp-1 and the HKS have nearly the same diameter body (within a few thousandths of an inch). Yet the HKS is much more tactile and solidly built. It locks in the rounds and fully releases them on command every time, which is more than I can say for the Comp-1. Secondly, because the diameter of the body of the Comp-1 is so large it would constantly hit the cylinder release latch on the side, making it awkward to just slip the rounds in. This was in spite of having grips with a speedloader cutout in them. In general, I would NOT recommend the Safariland Comp-1 J-S5 speedloader for use with ANY .44 revolver.

Without a doubt I prefer the Safariland speedloaders over HKS. I bought this one for my S&W model 29-2. It works perfectly just the way it was designed. It's not harder to load than the HKS, just different. The way I load it is drop the rounds base down. Then push the loader, bullets first against a wall while I push and twist the locking knob clockwise, et voila. The noise is why I don't like HKS. The rounds fit to loose and jingle.
