In the reverse rags-to-riches story of DICKIE ROBERTS: FORMER CHILD STAR, writer/actor David Spade's string of infectious laughs turn into waves of compassion. Former child star Dickie Roberts (Spade) has wound up working as a valet, dodging insults and lamely making attempts to regain his former glory with the help of his equally down-and-out agent, Sidney Wernick (Jon Lovitz). His buddy, the real-life recovering child star Leif Garrett, tells Dickie about a role in a Rob Reiner film that could revive Dickie's acting career. But Reiner is not convinced Dickie, whose mother and father left him at an early age, knows enough about normal life to nail the role. Dickie shows his commitment to the craft by moving in with a hired surrogate family to replicate the idea of childhood, but does not win points with his new Mom (Mary McCormack) when he introduces her kids to repugnant table manners, irreverent behavior, and foul language. As he absorbs the true meaning of tenderness and family, Dickie finally proves that he has something to offer each one of them.Spade and executive producer Adam Sandler find classic comedy in this retro theme, which includes appearances from former child stars like Danny Bonaduce (Danny in THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY) and Barry Williams (Greg from THE BRADY BUNCH). As with JOE DIRT (2001), Spade also shows a tender side, which is surprising coming from the king of deadpan one-liners and brutal sarcasm.

    with every movie david spade is in he is just more amazing , if you like Joe dirt you will like this ! Many child stars in this movie , they talk about the past child life star ... At 6 years old Dicke roberts stopped getting phone calls so he wants to relive his youth and his plan is great !!

    Loved this Movie!

    I love this movie. I think David Spade is a good, funny actor & this movie was right up my ally. It's probably pretty accurate too (just a guess). It's about a star (David Spade) who grew up as a child in a sitcom (or movies) and he doesn't know what to do now that he's an adult and realizes he never had a childhood and he goes looking for one and finds a great family on the way. I also love how some child stars (brady bunch, etc) come back into this show and at the end credits. I recommend this movie, and was so glad to find it on EBay!

    Funny and surprising at times

    A funny satiric film based on a ficticious former child star, who, ironically enough, hangs out with actual former child stars who appear as themselves in the movie. The outcome is hilarious, and the actors are to be commended for their candor and dedication to comedy, and general making viewers smile. You will recognize dozens of former child stars scattered throughout the movie, but more notably will appreciate the fine comedic expressions of the star of the movie, David Spade, who never ceases to amaze with his sarcastic nature. If you are over 40- you will love this film, or at the very least~ have a few laughs.

    Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2004, DVD)

    I bought this movie for my teenage daughter who is a huge David Spade fan. Its great to be able to find movies for a cheap price. Since we had never seen the movie, and in all probability she will like some else in the future, its nice not to have to spend alot of money on something like that. Thats why I like to buy on ebay. I have always had great luck with my purchases and sales and will continue to look for bargains!
