Device delivers what is promised, compliments amp mic sound
I had a recording session booked for a loud three piece rock band, with the session to be held in my living room. I wanted to assure the amps were properly captured to deliver the band's sound. After some research on direct boxes, I found the Radial JDX and liked what I was reading. I ordered two; one for bass and the other on guitar. This DI plugs into the amp head's speaker out and then cables out into the speaker cab. An XLR jack from the DI permits a mic cable to run to the interface. Couldn't be simpler. I placed mics on the speaker, as usual and recorded two tracks for each instrument. The direct sound is very present and captures the cranked amp, with fast transients and detail. It differs slightly from the mic sound in interesting ways. I found mixing the two with slightly ... It differs slightly from the mic sound in interesting ways. I found mixing the two with slightly different EQ shapes produced very good results. You could just as easily use the direct track alone, which eliminates 'mic bleed'. One thing to be aware of, because the direct signal arrives just slightly ahead of the mic'd signal [simple physics] the wave forms will be very slightly unaligned. This is a 'phase issue' but I found the recorded result satisfactory, not 'phasey'. However, I decided to stretch the tracks out, down to the sample rate and could see the very slightly misaligned waveforms. By moving the DI track to visually align it with the mic'd track, this issue was easily corrected. Radial will sell you a $350 device so you can turn a dial and correct the phase issue in real time, but this solves the problem, which really wasn't much of an issue to begin with. This product is built like a tank, nice solid construction. If you want to capture your amp sound, I highly recommend the Radial JDX be patched into your next recording session.
