About this product

Product Information

Xavier (Romain Duris), a wayward 25-year-old French guy, is encouraged by his father's friend to study Spanish and Economics--these skills will ensure his lucrative future, and since Xavier doesn't have much keeping him in Paris, other than his hippie mother and possessive girlfriend, he flies to Barcelona to participate in a study abroad program. Upon his arrival, Xavier meets a gregarious Parisian and his laconic but beautiful wife. Initially, Xavier rejects their friendship, but the couple bails him out when he cannot find an apartment, inviting him stay on their couch. Frantic to find his own lodgings, he interviews with an eclectic group of fellow exchange students, whose are from all over Western Europe. They find Xavier to be a suitable roommate, and the fun begins as the apartment becomes a hub of international activity. Xavier begins to shed his waywardness, becoming increasingly comfortable with his passions and pursuits. Set in the magnificence of Barcelona, the film is a nostalgic travelogue through Xavier's youthful and anxious wanderings. Politically, the film explores issues of ethnicity and international stereotypes, but for the most part its story is shot through a comedic lens.

  • The title speaks for itself.

The Spanish Apartment (L'auberge espagnole) is a story young man going to Graduate school in Spain. He meets several people within the film who either inspire him or piss him off. He rooms with about seven other people from all over Europe. I think the best part of the film takes place in their apartment, because all the frustrations when rooming together are shown and present a comical performance. The diversity of languages and races is amazing, because the chemistry these actors have together is full of life. I highly recommend this film for anyone, weather your interest is foreign films or simply just movies. This has everything a movie can have, and is my favorite foreign film. Get together and watch it with your friends it makes it more halarious.

  • Oh, to know then what I know now...

Although the action takes places in Europe w/ European students I could relate closely with these young people, their angst, their joy, their energy. It took me right back to my college days, the good, the reckless, and the painful. I just loved it and look forward to sharing it with my college age children. I first saw this film more than a year ago and it still comes to mind frequently. I think it's a gem.I would rank it up with Whit Stillman's Metropolitan and Barcelona.

  • Great French film

Currently I am a second year college student studying International Studies. I also have a great intrest in the French language and culture! What better way to hear and learn and see it all! Overall this is a great movie that can amuse a broad audiance of people of all ages. I have studies classic French films such as Pepe le Moko, A bout de Souffle, La Femme Nikita and over the years the French film industry has come a long way. Each film was enjoyable in its own way. I highly recomend this film for anyone intrested in culture and language.

  • The Spanish Apartment - a good buy

I was unaware at the time of purchase that the item was previously viewed. That was not a problem though as the movie was in perfect condition. I appreciated the fact that it had both Widescreen and Fullscreen versions, as we were able to watch it on our friends normal TV and our HDTV projection screen. Its one of my favorite movies and I love having it for myself now.

  • culture-filled travel movie :)

Great movie. I was a little apprehensive before I watched it, as I had read many not-so-good reviews, but I quite enjoyed it :) The only question I had was why do the subtitles not show when the people in the appartment are talking to each other?? I watched it in Español with English subtitles..... I still understood most of it, anyway :) Im now looking forward to watching Russian Dolls :D
