About this product

Product Information

A groundbreaking, profound view of twenty-first-century medical practice, giving doctors and patients the vital information they need to make better judgments together. On average, a physician will interrupt a patient describing her symptoms within eighteen seconds. In that short time, many doctors decide on the likely diagnosis and best treatment. Often, decisions made this way are correct, but at crucial moments they can also be wrong--with catastrophic consequences. In this revolutionary book, Jerome Groopman pinpoints the forces and thought processes behind the decisions doctors make, offering direct, intelligent questions patients can ask their doctors to help them get back on track. Drawing on extensive interviews with some of the country's best doctors and Groopman's own experiences as a doctor and as a patient, How Doctors Think reveals an important approach to twenty-first-century medical practice, giving doctors and patients a way to make better judgments together.

With stories of medical journeys including the authors own, he illustrates a variety of doctor's opinions.

Read this book years ago and as an oncology nurse I thought it was very informative. I believe people inside and outside of healthcare would benefit from the authors stories and give readers more confidence in questioning how one arrived at a diagnoses, treatment delays and general courtesies one should expect in the healthcare setting.

  • Definitely a great read - you need to check this out!

This book is written by a physician, with insight into the way that doctors think - hence the title of the book. It was written for the layperson, but even people like myself who work in healthcare also appreciate the sentiments expressed in the book. The book is relatively easy to read, with very little medical terminology. I'd suggest it as a read for both the patient as well as the person providing care. As a physical therapist, I'm aware of these issues and it would be a good reference also for our students who are moving into a doctoring position. Again, I'd highly recommend this book for one and for all!

  • Eye Opener

I had read this a few years back (library) and after a relative of mine became very ill, I remembered this book and bought 2 of them. One for her and one for me. It basically verifies what I've always thought about medicine. You need to be prepared before going in to a Dr's appointment, and afterward you need to do your own research. It's not that the Dr. may not have the intention of doing his best for you, it's just that human nature comes into play. The book gives examples of patients and their treatments and why certain errors occurred. Interesting and a must-have for anyone going through medical issues.

  • How Doctors Think

I loved this book which is so insightful about how doctors think when diagnosing patients. Dr. Groopman shares cases he has had in such a way that the reader can feel his empathy toward them. He allows you to delve into his mind as he tackles diagnoses with cunning and compassion.

  • Do you go to the doctor? Read this!

This is a very well-written, insightful book about how doctors are trained and how they approach patient's needs and desires. It is great information for any reader. We all know that, when we are getting medical treatment, we often feel things and need things that may not be addressed by a doctor. Well, here's why. It gives you can idea how to present your personal information (especially in not so cut-and-dried situations) so that your treatment is less formulaic and more individualized. The only reason I gave is 4 out of 5 stars is that I think the writing can be a bit repetitive, but, overall, it's well-worth reading.
