The story charts the rise and fall of a newspaper publisher whose wealth and power ultimately isolates him in his castle-like refuge. The film's protagonist, Charles Foster Kane, was based on a composite of Howard Hughes and William Randolph Hearst--so much so that Hearst tried to have the film suppressed. Every aspect of the production marked an advance in film language: the deep focus and deeply shadowed cinematography (from Gregg Toland); the discontinuous narrative, relying heavily on flashbacks and newsreel footage (propelled by a script largely written by Herman L. Mankiewicz); the innovative use of sound and score (sound by Bailey Fesler and James G. Stewart, music composed and conducted by Bernard Herrmann); and the ensemble acting forged in the fires of Welles's Mercury Theatre (featuring the film debuts of, among others, Joseph Cotten, Everett Sloane, and Agnes Moorehead). Every moment of the film, every shot, has been choreographed to perfection. The film is essential viewing, quite possibly the greatest film ever made and, along with THE BIRTH OF A NATION, certainly the most influential.

Still a great film.
Great film, full of great innovations, it was innovative in using a multi-character narrative technique, inspired cinematography, make-up, music, etc, etc. Nevertheless, there are a number of films that bypass Kane in terms of powerful emotional impact and artistic dexterity. It's still one of my favorite films, but it becomes a bit more dated as time moves on.

Citizen Kane
The DVD was defective. It took two days of CPU time to reconvstruct it before I could get a playable copy. When I did, the only playable copy had the commentary, not the original sound track. It looked like the DVD may have been intended for a different geographical area, not the US. It was pretty much a piece of junk.

BEST MOVIE EVER!!!
It's been said that the best way to read a really good mystery novel is to read the LAST chapter first, then start back at the beginning to find out HOW we wound up WHERE we wound up. This movie does exactly that: We get to see the ending first, then through a series of disjointed flashbacks, ALMOST everything that is missing from the story is filled in, piece by piece, to flesh out the story of this man's life from beginning to end. When we have come full circle back to the end again, we understand the man, but not the "secret" from the first two minutes. In fact, only the audience learns enough to solve the mystery, and that only in the final frames of the film. The characters in the story never do get it. An engaging story, well-told, and greatly ... A Cinematic Achievement That Almost Got Aborted!
Of course, I have heard about this movie throughout my life. However, I never put all the pieces of this movie together until I got this 2 disc DVD set. I have heard for years that this movie is all about William Randolf Hearst, but whoever thought that Orson Welles lived this movie too in his personal life. In the movie, Charles Francis Kane (Welles) is ripped from his home into boarding schools when his mother (Agnes Moorehead) thinks that he would have a better life than their life in an Oklahoma boarding house. It seems that Mrs. Kane suddenly struck it rich when oil was discovered on her land. Although his father objected, Mrs. Kane prevailed. Charlie learned a lot in school and with his incredible wealth inherited from his mother is able to develop a newspaper empire and ... Of course, I have heard about this movie throughout my life. He first marries the niece of a U S President, Emily Monroe Norton (Ruth Warrick of "All My Children" fame), but is exposed as a cheating husband right in the middle of his own election. He then marries the mistress, Susan Alexander (Dorothy Comingore), and builds her an opera house. What happens after this is up to you to find out by watching the movie. In the companion DVD, we see why William Randolph Hearst objected to the making of this movie. It seems that Welles intentionally made the movie like the aging Hearst's life. But Welles also had a life similar to Citizen Kane. The special feature explains all of it and even solves the riddle of the real meaning of "Rosebud." This movie had 9 nominations for Academy Awards but only won one--Best Screenplay for Herman J. Mankiewicz and Orson Welles. Due to the complete opposition by the Hearst newspaper monopoly, the movie almost was never shown. This opposition is rumored to have affected the Academy Award results too. In 1998, the American Film Institute named this movie as the #1 American movie of all times. I wouldn't go that far. But the story of this movie is required reading and watching for anyone interested in films. Don't expect a "Gone With the Wind" or "Doctor Zhivago"--not even a "Casablanca." This movie was filmed in black and white and moves slowly. But again, the special feature explains why it is such a cinematic achievement!

I can describe this movie in four words, "I Love This Movie"!!! Orson Wells is not only a great actor, he is very, very, very unique as a director. This film is an experiment with cinematography and editing, as well as screenwriting. It has been listed as the third greatest movie ever made by the polls, and sometimes number one by critics.
