About this product

Product Information

NATIONAL BESTSELLER . From the acclaimed author of Bird by Bird comes a personal, wise, very funny, and "life-affirming" book ( People ) that shows us how to find meaning and hope through shining the light of faith on the darkest part of ordinary life. "Anne Lamott is walking proof that a person can be both reverent and irreverent in the same lifetime. Sometimes even in the same breath." - San Francisco Chronicle Lamott claims the two best prayers she knows are- "Help me, help me, help me" and "Thank you, thank you, thank you." She has a friend whose morning prayer each day is "Whatever," and whose evening prayer is "Oh, well." Anne thinks of Jesus as "Casper the friendly savior" and describes God as "one crafty mother." Despite-or because of-her irreverence, faith is a natural subject for Anne Lamott. Since Operating Instructions and Bird by Bird, her fans have been waiting for her to write the book that explained how she came to the big-hearted, grateful, generous faith that she so often alluded to in her two earlier nonfiction books. The people in Anne Lamott's real life are like beloved characters in a favorite series for her readers-her friend Pammy, her son, Sam, and the many funny and wise folks who attend her church are all familiar. And Traveling Mercies is a welcome return to those lives, as well as an introduction to new companions Lamott treats with the same candor, insight, and tenderness. Lamott's faith isn't about easy answers, which is part of what endears her to believers as well as nonbelievers. Against all odds, she came to believe in God and then, even more miraculously, in herself. As she puts it, "My coming to faith did not start with a leap but rather a series of staggers."

Reviews
"Even at her most serious, she never takes herself or her spirituality too seriously. Lamott is a narrator who has relished and soaked up the details of her existence, equally of mirth and devastation, spirit and grief, and spilled them onto her pages." --The New York Times Book Review "Life-affirming...Lamott fills her text with remarkable detail and a refreshing sense of humanity that has you guffawing on one page and bawling on the next." --People "You'll loveTraveling Merciesfor Lamott's unblinking confrontation with God's love, and you'll buy copies for all your friends struggling with faith." --USA Today "Exuberant and captivating.... shifts from laugh-out-loud wisecracks to heart-wrenching poignancy. At one point she seems a reincarnation of Erma Bombeck; at others, she could be Annie Dillard or Kathleen Norris." --Chicago Tribune "Compares with the witty and moving Christian apologetics of C. S. Lewis.... Lamott is a fine writer who combines theology with humor, compassion, and practicality." --The Atlanta Journal-Constitution "Applies passion, wisdom, and intensity to a scorchingly personal look at the road from spiritual apathy to ardent belief....Traveling Mercies, like Ms. Lamott herself, is a consistent delight." --Dallas Morning News "Lamott has developed an entirely new genre of religious writing. Gritty, stark, and humorous, she catches the reader by surprise when she points her pen heavenward.... Anne Lamott [is] the patron saint of struggling sinners, a woman who loves God enough to be divinely human."--Religion News Service "Anne Lamott is walking proof that a person can be both reverent and irreverent in the same lifetime. Product is 95% alike picture but a little more blurry. Controller play well but had a notice from psn that my joypad wasn't authentic and could by problematic🤷‍♂️ no trouble so far! Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

    Thought provoking

This book was recommended to me by a friend who thought it might help me out right now. So being the skeptic that I am I agreed,,,and was pleasantly surprised that I could relate to some of the writers thoughts. I am glad I bought it

  • Traveling Mercies..starts slow but gets better

Actually, I heard about this book at church, recommended by my pastor. A bit of an odd book for a minister to recommend. I was excited to read it. It did start out a bit slow, but...it came around, it sometimes takes me a few chapters to get into a book. About the same with this one, and I do plan to go on and find and order and read her otherbooks. If anyone has one of her other books, (used) and wants to sell it, please get in touch with me. Thank You!

  • A Perfect Book

Someone loaned me this book when I was going to go into the hospital. I was pretty sick and didn't feel like trying to concentrate on a novel so grabbed this on the way out the door. It was the perfect choice. As soon as I came home I knew I had to have my own copy because I knew I'd want to read it again and again. This is the kind of book you will pick up again and again. It has something for your every frame of mind. Anne Lamott is terrific. She can keep you entertained with her stores, encourage you when you feel lousy about yourself, comfort you when you're sad, pick you up when you're unsure about your cellulite or your parenting skills and most of all, make you laugh with her at herself and at yourself. By the time you've read a few pages you'll wish you had her for a best friend ...

  • Traveling Mercies

My Pastor had mentioned a passage from this book in one of his Sermons. I was intrigued so I ordered. Came quickly and I am in process of completing.
