Auger Electron Spectroscopy harnesses the electron "Auger Effect"...the phenomenon that occurs when the surface of a substance is excited by electrons or X-rays, causing its electrons to become unstable and jump to prescribed alternate energy states. Depending on the material, the energy released by those changes has distinctive and identifiable patterns which provide information about what the material is composed of and to a certain extent how that composition is structured. The technology has been established since the early 1960s, but this will be the first book to offer a an easily-understood overview and introduction to the technology, its uses, and how it can and does work with and complement related types of spectroscopy such as XPS, SIMS, EDS, EDX, MEIS, LEIS, and RBS.
