Voyage au centre de la Terre, est un roman de science-fiction, crit en 1864 par Jules Verne. Le professeur Otto Lidenbrock de Hambourg ach te un manuscrit original d'une saga islandaise du Douzi me si cle de Snori Sturluson, et d couvre accidentellement un vieux parchemin crit en caract res runiques. Au terme de nombreux efforts, Otto et son neveu Axel finissent par le d chiffrer. C'est un message de Arne Saknussem, alchimiste islandais du Seizi me si cle, qui pr tend avoir d couvert un passage partir du volcan Sneeffels jusque dans le centre de la terre. Axel, le narrateur, finit par acc der aux desiderata de son oncle et le suit dans son exp dition, qui doit les amener en Islande une date bien pr cise. Pour cela, il abandonne celle qu'il aime, Gra ben, sa belle Virlandaise. Les deux hommes arrivent dans un paysage de d solation, curieux, presque lunaire; et accompagn s de leur guide local, Hans, ils se rendent jusqu'au volcan et y arrivent avant les calendes de Juillet . Ils descendent dans le volcan, d couvrent une incroyable mer int rieure, une for t de champignons g ants (choix pour notre illustration de couverture originale), assistent des combats d'animaux pr historiques entre eux, et finalement, quand ils croient mourir de faim, sans espoir de remont e, une ruption volcanique les ram ne la surface, les faisant ressortir par le volcan Stromboli en Italie. Ils ne seront pas all s jusqu'au centre de la terre. Mais le professeur Lidenbrock devient c l bre et Axel pouse Gra ben. Comme l'habitude de Jules Verne, le roman est un habile m lange de donn es scientifiques, d'extrapolations os es et d'aventure. L'introduction du roman refl te l'engouement d'alors pour une science jeune, la cryptologie N 1. La suite encha ne sur une description de l'Islande de la fin du XIX e si cle, puis sur une vaste introduction deux autres sciences en plein essor, la pal ontologie et la g ologie (on notera d'ailleurs les divergences entre les interpr tations de l' poque et celles couramment admises aujourd'hui).
