About this product
Product Information
As a theologian in the Reformed tradition, covenant theology was for Jonathan Edwards the internal scaffolding that gave shape to the biblical story of redemption. The establishment of the eternal rule of righteousness as the basis of the believer's communion with God and eternal happiness is a central theme beginning with the Covenant of Works, grounded in the eternal Covenant of Redemption, and culminating in the Covenant of Grace. It is the basis for the law-gospel distinction in Edwards and the early architects of federal theology. For the ""God intoxicated"" New England Puritan preacher, this was no dry academic exercise. Rather, it was a joyous and affectionate discovery and embrace of what God had ordained in eternity, what Christ accomplished in history on the cross, and what the Holy Spirit is doing and will complete in the church. This study grew out of current discussions in Reformed scholarship questioning aspects of traditional covenant theology. As a key transitional figure in the history of Reformed theology, Edwards's thinking is still relevant. The richness and depth of Edwards's vision of redemptive history provides a clear and comprehensive understanding of his Reformed soteriology and the role of evangelical obedience in justification.

Reviews
"Paul Hoehner offers a powerful analysis of the theology of Jonathan Edwards, placing his thought lucidly in the context of his Reformed heritage. Combining theological acuity and great depth of historical learning, Hoehner's book advances scholarship on Jonathan Edwards, on the Reformed theological tradition, and on Enlightenment religious thought." --Charles T. Mathewes, University of Virginia, Charlottesville "Dr. Hoehner's book is timely. As a gifted medical doctor, scientist, and theologian . . . he brilliantly provides the proper window to enter the beautiful and grand mountains of Edwards's theology, philosophy, and doctrinal and practical implications. . . . This book is a balanced and proper guide for those who want to dive into Edwards's theological and philosophical world and will certainly be a magnificent resource for Edwardsean scholarship for many years to come." --Jeong Koo Jeon, Faith Theological Seminary "Paul Hoehner has provided us with a historically and theologically contextually sensitive treatment of Jonathan Edwards as a Reformed covenant or federal theologian. Hoehner interacts with recent criticisms of Edwards as to his Reformed bona fides . The author corrects numerous misunderstandings of Edwards and provides us with the lenses we need to not only read Jonathan Edwards appreciatively, but carefully and accurately. Hoehner has advanced Edwards studies, and scholars and interested readers will owe him a debt of gratitude. Hoehner shows that there is still more territory to traverse in Edwards scholarship. May his tribe increase!" --Jeffrey C. Waddington, vice president, board of directors, Reformed Forum

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
