(Miroslav Krleza) Kaum ein Ereignis hat die ffentlichkeit seit dem 2. Weltkrieg so stark ersch ttert, wie der Kriegsausbruch im ehemaligen Jugoslawien im Jahre 1991. Die Medien berboten sich gegenseitig mit Berichten ber Deportationen, Menschenrechtsverletzungen, Todeslager, ethnischen S uberungen, systematischen Massenvergewaltigungen, etc.. Die Terrorisierung und Vertreibung der Zivilbev lkerung sowie das Ausma der Zerst rungen, um aus einem Vielv lkerstaat ethnisch homogene Nationalstaaten zu schaffen, erschweren das Verst ndnis f r einen solchen Krieg. Wie war es m glich, da mitten in Europa gegen Ende des 20. Jahrhundert, ein solch barbarischer B rgerkrieg - oder eine derartige "Dummheit", wie es wohl der Schriftsteller M. Krleza formuliert h tte, entstehen konnte? In dieser Arbeit wird der Versuch unternommen, den Balkankrieg von 1991-1995 so umfassend wie m glich darzustellen, sowie m gliche Ursachen und Hintergr nde, die zu diesem Krieg gef hrt haben, zu analysieren. Aus diesem Grund ist es notwendig, sich zun chst mit der Geschichte Jugoslawiens zu besch ftigen und neben der ethnischen Komponente des Konflikts auch den wiederaufgelebten Nationalismus zu behandeln.
