"As the turn-of-the-century began in America, Harper's Bazaar began featuring both illustrations and photographs for its covers and inside features of high society and increasingly of fashion. It's interesting to note that during this late Victorian period, as the women's suffrage movement was gaining momentum (American women did not all win the right to vote until 1920 with the passing of the 19th Amendment), the introduction of more tailored dresses and jackets coincided with women's new sense of feminism. Bazaar also began profiling prominent socialites, such as the Astors and the Griscoms.”

A theatre costumer's point of view
Anyone who expresses interest in fashion or costume history needs to own this book! The historical pictures of hats, hair styles, men's wear, and gorgeous victorian dresses are stunningly portrayed. I work in theatre with costumes doing construction and design and I have loved this book since I first used it toward a design of a dress. It is historically accurate since the pictures are actually from Harper's Bazaar Magazine from the Victorian period. With over 1000 pen and ink illustrations, they are simple and to the point for their style and beautiful complexity. From the bows and the ruffles to the flowers and the bustles, I would love to make all of these pictures if only money wasn't an option. The simple thought to go back and observe a time when satin, silk, and lace ... Anyone who expresses interest in fashion or costume history needs to own this book! Excellent primary source material
Illustrations from period source material make fashion research of the late 19th century much easier. The original drawings are accompanied by the original notes which explain the fashions and use terms from the period.
