About this product

Product Information

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Scotland, 1766. Sentenced to a life of misery in the brutal coal mines, twenty-one-year-old Mack McAsh hungers for escape. His only ally: the beautiful, highborn Lizzie Hallim, who is trapped in her own kind of hell. Though separated by politics and position, these two restless young people are bound by their passionate search for a place called freedom. From the teeming streets of London to the infernal hold of a slave ship to a sprawling Virginia plantation, Ken Follett's turbulent, unforgettable novel of liberty and revolution brings together a vivid cast of heroes and villains, lovers and rebels, hypocrites and hell-raisers--all propelled by destiny toward an epic struggle that will change their lives forever.

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

  • Another great historical fiction tale by Follett

I really enjoy Follett's historical fiction and he is a great storyteller. It is a fun way to learn a lot of factual history. I would rate most of his books at a 4 - 5 star, although he has had a couple of duds. He also has a tremendous amount of diversity in the story lines Not a formula author. A Place Called Freedom is definitely equal to his other great stories.

  • Ken Follett – A PLACE CALLED FREEDOM

The novel depicts a pre-Victorian era where white slavery was common in the Motherland as well as across the ocean in the Colonies. It trumpets the story of a self-assured and thinking slave, righteous, honest and outspoken in his ways against the laird—a Scottish landowner—without the fear of being persecuted. His opponent, the son of the laird, brought up in a silver-spooned but corrupt society, yet himself financially broke—thanks to his father—marries a woman of substance based on deceptions and lies. The slave and the son of the laird have nothing in common but the woman. A PLACE CALLED FREEDOM (1996), began very strongly, and rather interestingly, in Scotland and continued on with the same strength and intensity throughout the book, to London and finally to the Virginia Colony. The ...

  • It speaks for itself.

I think it is one of Ken Follett's better books. His sense of time and place transport the reader into another world. The characters are three dimensional and easily related to because they have their faults and frailties just like the rest of us. I enjoy his writing style and I marvel at the number of characters he handles with dexterity. I am also a writer and I appreciate the hard work that goes into such a novel. I really don't have any negative comments to make about this very enjoyable novel. It is an excellent example of historical fiction. The "blurb" on the back cover describes it perfectly: "From the dirt and danger of a coal mine to the glittering chandeliers of a palace, from the corridors of power and to the bedrooms of the mighty, this book takes us into the entangled ...
